Greetings and happy new year! This post is to announce a new educational service offered by the the Rural Services Program of the New Mexico State Library: Career Online High School! The program offers adults (19 plus years of age) the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and entry level career certificate at the same time. This is not a GED but a real high school diploma, to be completed within 18 months. Qualified and successful student applicants will receive one free full tuition scholarship from the library. Dear Patrons,
Unfortunately, the bookmobile has been suspended again because of the lockdown. Tomorrow and Wednesday, I will be working to contact people who had requests for delivery this week and offer to switch to books by mail. Since I am unsure about December travel at this time, books by mail and eBooks are the services that the Bookmobile office will start promoting more until we can travel again.

Please note that our staff is currently teleworking 100% until November 30, so we appreciate your patience as we wait for news about returning to the office. I will make a more formal announcement with information about our changes to services by email and social media tomorrow. In the meantime, you are welcome to search the online catalog to place holds on books you’re interested in. Either I or someone in our staff will email you back to confirm your order.

I have heard some feedback about the search-ability of the catalog being a little tricky, so please don’t hesitate to send me a message if there is something I can guide you with or help you find. For the patrons on our stops that we haven’t been able to visit since March, please accept my utmost gratitude for your patience these past several months. If you want to return your checked out items by mail, simply send me a message to let me know so I can mail you a merchandise-return card.

Note: in order to place holds on books, you must be a registered patron with Rural Bookmobile West. If you are experiencing problems logging in, please send me a message so that I can reset your login.

We have had to eliminate some stops due to this being a “day run” schedule only. It is very important that we adhere to social distancing guidelines and masks will be required when coming to the bookmobile.
• All stops will only be 30 minutes.
• No one is allowed on the bookmobile at this time.
• This will be a pick up stop for returns only at this time. Please bring a list of books you would like us to take out to you in October. You may also use our online catalog to place holds. View the online catalog here: http://rbm.nmstatelibrary.org. Please feel welcome to call or email if you need your login information and how-to.
• Masks will be required at all times and 6ft social distancing is required.
• Please DO NOT come to the bookmobile if you are sick in any way.
• One person at a time will be allowed to come to the table that is set up outside the bookmobile – you will pick up your books and drop off any returns you may have for us. RETURNS – All returns must be placed in a bag for pickup.
• For those of you who have not yet submitted your census survey we will have a laptop set up and I (Liana) will assist in helping you submit your census information – PLEASE complete your census - It is the basis for distributing seats in the House of Representatives and in various state legislatures. It is also used to determine the distribution of nearly $900 billion for federally funded programs, which are apportioned based on an area's population, income, age, and other factors. It’s also what funds the bookmobiles!
• If a route is delayed or cancelled due to weather or safety concerns, we will notify you as soon as possible via an email, phone call or Facebook.
• For those stops we are unable to get to, we are happy to assist with eBooks and books by mail – please reach out to me for assistance.

Census.gov

Before I make any announcements about potential travel, I am sharing this message about the census from our agency, the NM Department of Cultural Affairs. Thanks! - Liana

By now, many of you know that we are approaching the end of “Census Season” and that the deadline to complete the 2020 U.S. Census questionnaire is September 30th. You may have heard that New Mexico being undercounted will negatively impact our federal funding and political representation at the federal level for the next decade. What you may not realize is how important that information is to the arts and culture industry in New Mexico, as well as library services in rural areas.

Many federal agencies, including the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which funds a large portion of New Mexico State Library’s bookmobile service, as well as statewide databases, and the Library for the Blind and Print Disabled, distribute funds on a per capita basis that is determined by the Census. If we are undercounted, the effect is real. We also lose money for critical major arts and culture organizations like museums, theater groups, symphonies, and opera companies. We lose money for arts in the schools and community art programs. We lose money for local arts councils and studio tours, for folk art apprenticeship programs, and for small non-profit arts organizations.

Please complete the Census today and encourage your friends, family, and communities, to do so as well. You can find all the info at https://www.census.gov/.

Repairs to the bookmobile are ongoing this week. The stops on December 10th-12th have been canceled. Week 2 services will resume January 13-16. We are sorry for this inconvenience. This affects our patrons in Datil, Pie Town, Quemado, Aragon, Apache Creek, Reserve, Rancho Grande, Luna, Buckhorn, Rodeo, and Hachita. We hope to be back on the road by next week!
