Highlands Community Ministries We are dedicated to supporting our neighbors and strengthening our Highlands community. These resources are coordinated through our full-time ministries.

HCM is an interfaith non-profit organization uniting the efforts and energies of [24] congregations to support and empower our Highlands neighbors in need. We serve residents in zip codes 40204 and 40205 and, as a proud part of the Association of Community Ministries and the sister ministries it represents, we work to create positive change for Louisville at large. For more than four decades, HCM

has been a collaboration of concerned neighbors helping to enhance the community at large. While our roots stretch back into the late 1960s, HCM was officially incorporated in 1970 to represent a network of interfaith congregations. Through HCM, these congregations come together to offer the broadest possible resources to all segments of our community—children, families, seniors and those in need. While each ministry has a unique mission and focus, their efforts support the larger goals of our organization. These ministries have been organized through the combined efforts and financial support of interfaith congregations in the Highlands, as well as community grants and the neighbors and local businesses who provide personal donations. In this way, our Highlands residents can directly invest in the long-term community development that’s closest to home. Throughout our long legacy of community development, our approach has remained the same. We believe in a dynamic, evolving, shared-responsibility approach to community support, and our programs have been designed to best facilitate this approach. We create the interfaith unity that drives action—and creates a stronger, more empowered community experience for all.

Two weeks ago, we shared the sad news of the passing of Edwin Stanley “Stan” Esterle, the founding Executive Director of Highlands Community Ministries. Today, we wanted to share his obituary and service information with our community.

Stan devoted decades of his life to building HCM into a place of compassion, care, and connection for our neighbors. His vision helped shape not only this organization, but community ministry work throughout Louisville.

His obituary beautifully captures the depth of his faith, his love for people, and the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind through his family and through the countless lives touched by HCM.

We invite you to read and remember Stan with us.

Last week at Eastern Star, something really special happened.

Author Stewart Dunn joined us to read Nico’s New Necklace, and it wasn’t just a story time. It was a room full of kids raising their hands, coming up front, and becoming part of the story.

Together, they helped Nico, a seabird who mistakes trash for treasure, and learned how small choices, like recycling or using reusable bottles, can make a big difference for our animal friends.

It was joyful, a little messy, and full of curiosity…exactly how learning should be.

We’re so grateful for moments like this that remind us how much kids are ready to care for the world around them. Needless to say, we think we've got a room full of future planet protectors.

Last month, one of our Meals on Wheels routes looked a little different.

Oscar Mayer reached out and asked if they could deliver meals alongside our team. They showed up ready to help, driving the Wienermobile and bringing a bit of unexpected joy along the route.

While the vehicle may have turned heads, the heart of the work remained the same. Meals were delivered, neighbors were checked on, and connections were made.

Sometimes community care looks exactly as you would expect. And sometimes, it arrives in a bright orange vehicle that makes everyone smile. #
