Today’s Feature Friday is “Marquis Marie de Layfayette” by Jean-Antoine Houdon 🇺🇸

“Given to city of Louisville by French government to mark the American bicentennial in 1976. Lafayette visited Louisville in 1824 and was grateful when some Kentuckians aided him after he capsized in his boat. The bust is a copy of a Houdon work on exhibit at the Musee de Versailles. French Ambassador Jacques Kosciusko-Morizet presided over the unveiling of the new bust. The bust was temporarily displayed by the J. B. Speed Art Museum before being permanently sited.” Source: IAS Inventory

Today's Friday Feature is "Medal of Honor" by author and sculptor Doyle Glass. ( )

Located on Jefferson Street downtown, the statue features the image of John C. Squires, the first Medal of Honor recipient from Kentucky, and a Louisville Native who lost his life in Italy during WWII. The Plaque of the statue lists the names of many other Kentuckians who served in the US Armed Forces between 1861-2021.

Friday Feature: "Flock of Finns" by Black folk artist, Marvin Finn (1913-2007).

Finn's first works were toys that he decided to make for himself growing up in Clio, Alabama. After moving to Louisville and marrying, he continued to make toys for his children, building a large collection of animals and machinery from his family farm. Finn's designs were later brough to life by Hick's Equipment and painted by artist Melissa Wilson in 2000-2001. Stop by east Witherspoon Street and find your favorite!

"I didn't learn this out of no book. I had to leave school in the first grade to go to the field to work. But I had a hobby of drawing and painting, and I could whittle and build. And I had my imagination" - Marvin Finn

Friday Feature: Louisville Windchime Gateway (1988), by Jasper D. Ward and Gregory Paul Schrodt.

This aluminum work is a perfect example of where public art and architecture can meet to activate an otherwise ordinary space. This sculpture is a part of the PARC garage located along South 7th Street downtown.
