During the month of November, we celebrate Native American Heritage Month. Native American Heritage Month honors the diverse cultures and histories of Native and Indigenous people in the United States and the important contributions of the first Americans to the growth of North Carolina.

Today, we recognize Matt Scott (Robeson County District Attorney's Office), who serves as the first Native American District Attorney in North Carolina, elected in 2019. District Attorney Matt Scott served as a combat Veteran serving in Iraq, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for his service, and continues to serve his country as a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve. He is a current member of the NC Conference of District Attorneys Executive Committee and launched the Robeson County Drug Treatment Court in 2020. This court promotes recovery through a coordinated, team approach, including cooperation and collaboration of judges, prosecutors, defense counsel, probation authorities, treatment providers, and law enforcement.

In 2021, District Attorney Matt Scott was honored with the Dogwood Award, an award that honors North Carolinians who are dedicated to keeping people safe, healthy, and happy in their communities. He was also appointed and served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney assigned to the Organized Crime and Drug Task Force within the Eastern District of North Carolina.

Join us as we continue to honor the rich cultures, traditions, and histories of Native American tribes across the nation. I’m proud to see how treatment providers, recovery support groups, community service organizations, community leaders, and the criminal justice system have come together to fight Substance Use Disorder in our county in such an impactful way.

And I’m grateful that the work of our Recovery Courts—DWI, Adult Drug, and Family Treatment Courts— and the Robeson County Sheriff's Office’s SAFE program have contributed to this decrease in overdoses.

Recovery is possible.
