🚑🔥 **A BUSY COUPLE OF WEEKENDS AT VIGILES ACADEMY!** 🔥🚁
Our EMT students have had an action-packed couple of weekends, completing both their **Medical Competency Day** and **Trauma Competency Day**!
These competency days are designed to take students beyond the classroom and put their knowledge, skills, communication, teamwork, and decision-making to the test through realistic, hands-on scenarios.
🩺 **MEDICAL COMPETENCY DAY**
For Medical Competency Day, we were excited to incorporate our **AEMT students directly into the EMT scenarios**.
Our EMT crews were responsible for initial patient assessment, stabilization, treatment, and recognizing when additional resources were needed. Our AEMT students then responded as **ALS intercepts**, bringing their expanded scope and additional treatment options into the scenario.
This gave both classes an opportunity to practice something they'll encounter in the real world: **different levels of EMS providers working together as one team for the patient.**
Students worked through challenging medical emergencies involving cardiac and respiratory patients, altered mental status, airway management, resuscitation, medication administration, patient movement, and transport decisions.
🩸🚁 **TRAUMA COMPETENCY DAY**
The following weekend, the focus shifted to trauma—and we were excited to have Air Evac Lifeteam 17 join us!
Our EMT students worked through high-stress situations involving **emergent patient moves, rapid extrication, confined vehicle assessment, airway and ventilation management, serious bleeding, burns, smoke exposure, and traumatic injuries.**
Having Air Evac 17 involved gave our students another opportunity to see how prehospital care extends beyond the ambulance and how ground EMS and air medical crews work together when caring for critically injured patients.
The goal wasn't simply to perform individual skills. Students had to assess the entire situation, establish priorities, communicate as a crew, make decisions under pressure, and safely move their patient toward definitive care.
❤️ **NONE OF THIS HAPPENS WITHOUT OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS**
We want to extend a huge **THANK YOU to Eastern Greene Middle School and Eastern Greene High School** for opening their facilities to us and giving our students the space and opportunity to participate in this type of realistic, hands-on EMS education.
We also want to thank the **Eastern Greene Fire Territory** for their support and involvement in making these training days possible.
And a huge **THANK YOU to Air Evac 17** for spending time with our students and adding an air-medical component to Trauma Competency Day.
Strong EMS education takes more than instructors and classrooms. It takes **schools, fire departments, EMS agencies, air medical providers, volunteers, instructors, and community partners all working together.** We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make these weekends possible.
Most importantly, we're proud of our **EMT and AEMT students**. These were long, challenging days designed to push them outside their comfort zones—and they stepped up.
**Train hard. Work together. Be ready when the call comes.**
