We have started getting ready for improving Thaxter’s Spring.
We plan to improve off road parking and building a spring house to protect the water source while ensuring future public access.

Here is your chance to be part of history!

Sponsors have an opportunity to help build FORT FOSTER at Machias Liberty Village.

This is the 250th anniversary of the fort's original construction. Our goal is to build FORT FOSTER this year.

This structure will stand for many generations in honor of the early settlers who defended Machias.

You may donate at any of the levels listed in the brochure.
Sponsors' names will be displayed at the fort.

The names of local contractors who are donating equipment, labor, and materials will also be recognized at the fort.

Machias Liberty Village is a new historical preservation initiative and living history site in Machias, Maine, designed to recreate a 1770s Revolutionary War-era village. Located on East Kennebec Road, the site will feature reconstructed structures like Fort Foster and offers educational demonstrations about early American life and the region's intense Revolutionary War history.
Situated on donated land on East Kennebec Road, the project, led by the Machias Historical Society aims to showcase Revolutionary War history.
The site includes a recreation of Fort Foster, a blockhouse from 1776, as well as a, 1770s-era spring house, and highlights the "forgotten" role of Machias in the Revolutionary War, including battles in 1775, 1776, and 1777 where local militia and the Wabanaki Confederacy defended the town.
Work began in early 2026 to create a space for re-enactors and educational demonstrations.

Helen’s Restaurant made a generous donation to help us rebuild Fort Foster!
Fort Foster was built for the defense of Machias in 1776. The British burned it in 1777.
We are rebuilding the fort this summer on the 250th anniversary.
