Zohran Mamdani has won the New York mayoral election, according to the Associated Press, which called the closely watched race shortly after polls closed at 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Mamdani defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent, for the second time this year after besting him in the Democratic primary in June. Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa came a distant third.
