September is Hunger Action Month. I was happy to join Way Forward last week as they launched their effort to get 25,000 pounds of food. Their offices are in Middleton, but many of their clients are from Madison and they are opening an office on Odana Rd in District 19 to support their affordable housing services.

It was a delight to again attend the final presentation of the Wanda Fullmore Youth Interns. This year's cohort researched and recommended safety improvements for the Northport Drive and Raymond Rd corridors. These high school kids learned a lot about how our city government works. Their recommendations were as good as we see at the Board of Public Works and Transportation Committee. The future is in able hands.

I've served on the Wexford Village board for a dozen years. The July 4 picnic is a highlight of every year and a great opportunity to learn what District 19 folks are thinking about. We always have an abundance of picnic food. The neighborhood has a lot of new young families as evident from the crowd of children lined up for games.

My Dad was a volunteer firefighter in our tiny Wisconsin village, which meant I occasionally got to ride in a fire truck for parades as a kid. I've never lost that joy, so appreciate the invitation from the Spring Harbor Neighborhood Association to ride in a 97-year-old fire truck with Grand Marshall Former Senator Fred Risser for their Independence Day parade.

Last Tuesday Council President Madison, Alder Ochowicz and I had a great time learning about The House Urban Arts Initiative on Normandy Lane in District 19. I love attending the Madison Fire Department annual graduation ceremony. This year it was held at the TruStage auditorium on June 5. It's a serious celebration laced with some humor. Perhaps I find it so meaningful because of all of the firefighters in my family history including my grandfather, whose name is inscribed on Milwaukee's Fallen Firefighters Memorial.
