*Weekly Training Topic* 💦BIG WATER WEEK💧

This week both Career and Volunteer members trained on master stream deployment and operations.

Master streams are fire suppression/water delivery appliance that have the capability of delivering over 350 gallons of water per minute. These appliances are typically employed when there are large volumes of fire, where smaller diameter and lower gallonage appliances would be less effective.

Members practiced both, portable monitors (can be mounted on the deck of a fire engine or on the ground), and aerial ladder mounted monitors.

While we don’t use these appliances often, it is important for us to be proficient with all methods of delivering water for fire suppression.

Firefighting Foam Operations was on this week’s schedule.

Water alone is not effective for extinguishing fires involving flammable liquids, as just water will splash the ignited liquid, and potentially spread the fire. Mixing water with a foam concentrate, creates a blanket over flammable liquids, smothering & extinguishing flames; as well and suppressing vapors, preventing ignition.

Using a special appliance, called a foam eductor, and a special aerating nozzle, finished foam is produced by mixing the foam concentrate with water. We are able to select the percentage of foam mixed with water, increasing the density of the blanket.

For training purposes, we use a biodegradable soap as our foam concentrate, as conventional foam concentrate contains chemicals that are not recommended for long term use, and should only be used for practical, real world applications.

If you happened to pass by Fire Headquarters today, you may have noticed our flag was flown at half-staff.

Flags were ordered to be at half-staff today, May 3rd, by the President to honor the brave firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. We humbly salute the fallen brothers and sisters that have given their lives protecting their communities.

How do firefighters call for help when they are in trouble?

Simple. We call a MAYDAY. This week, we reviewed our mayday procedures and practiced transmitting a mayday. But our firefighters didn’t get off that easy…

Each firefighter was given a scenario that would be necessary to transmit a mayday - a malfunction of a breathing apparatus, lost or disoriented, or a downed member, for example. Then, members went through a few brief & basic obstacles, and then, after getting their heart rates increased and a little stress on their body, transmitted their mayday.

Maydays are usually never called in the comfort of a chair in a climate controlled room. They’re typically called when a firefighter has spent a significant amount of energy, under duress and complete exhaustion. While we don’t completely exhaust our members, it’s good to make conditions a bit more realistic. Being prepared to transmit a mayday under stress, better prepares our members to call for help should they need it. Safety is our number one priority, for both the people we serve, and our own members.

Portable ladders was on this week’s schedule. Members practiced carrying, raising and extending ladders of all lengths - both single and two firefighter techniques.

Often, portable ladders are the fastest way to rescue a victim trapped on an upper floor. Being proficient with ladders is very important, as these skills must be muscle memory, in the event a portable ladder needs to be deployed rapidly.

🏀📚🧑‍🏫Books vs. Badges 👮‍♂️👨‍🚒🏀

Yesterday, Fire Department members teamed up with our friends over at City of Peekskill Police Department, and challenged some Peekskill Middle School teachers to a friendly game of basketball.

This game was to celebrate the hard work of the students that just completed annual state testing, and give them some time to focus on fun, taking a break from studying.

We are glad to report that everyone had a blast, and no injuries were reported - plenty of soreness today, but no injuries!

We’re always grateful to get out into our community, especially our great schools, and have some fun! We look forward to the next one! (After some ice, Tylenol, and a little rest!)

Continuing training on Ladder 58 was the topic for this week. Members expanded evolutions by taking the truck to various areas throughout the City and deploying the aerial ladder.

Testing the capabilities and limitations under realistic conditions, is the best way for our members to be well prepared to operate the aerial in an emergency situation. Different elevations and terrain give us a better understanding how well the truck works throughout our City.
