Sky-High Success for our D.A.R.E. Essay Winners! ✈️

What a way to celebrate our future leaders! On June 7, 2026, we honored our 5th Grade D.A.R.E. essay winners from Van Wert, Lincolnview, and Crestview. These students set the bar high with their commitment to making healthy, safe choices, and we wanted to make sure they were rewarded accordingly.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Fred and Marcia Pond, these students took to the skies for an aerial tour of our community! Watching the excitement on their faces as they saw Van Wert County from above was the perfect capstone to their hard work.

📢 ATTENTION COMMUNITY: Peony Parade Traffic Alert! 📢

Get ready for the annual Peony Parade this Saturday, June 6th! To ensure a safe and enjoyable event for everyone, please take note of the following traffic updates and road closures.

🗓 Date: Saturday, June 6th
🕔 Parade Start Time: 5:00 PM
⛔ Road Closures: East/West traffic on Main Street will be closed starting at 4:30 PM.

📍 The 400 block of E. Main St. and the 100 block of N. Cherry St. will be closed starting at 1:00 PM

The Route: The parade will begin at Main/Cherry, traveling westbound on Main St. to Burt St.

⚠️ Travel Safely
Plan Ahead: Please plan your travel routes accordingly as intersections along Main Street will be closed to thru-traffic beginning at 4:30 PM.

Follow Instructions: Officers and CERT volunteers will be stationed at major intersections to manage traffic and ensure the safety of all participants and spectators. Please follow all posted signage and officer directions.

Stay Alert: If you are attending, please be mindful of pedestrians and keep all intersections clear until the parade has fully passed.

Guide to downtown parking!

To help everyone navigate our downtown parking rules easily, we’ve put together this simple breakdown based on the local ordinance. Please take a moment to review these guidelines to ensure you’re parked safely and correctly.

General Rules for Van Wert City ORN 78 Sch.II B

Enforcement Hours: Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Exclusions: No enforcement on holidays.

Time Limit: You may park in designated spaces for a maximum of 2 consecutive hours without paying a fee.


Penalty: Exceeding the 2-hour limit results in a $40.00 fine, which must be paid within 48 hours of issuance.

Specific Parking Exceptions

North Side of East Main Street (East of Walnut Street):

The first 2 spaces are designated as 2-hour parking; the rest of the street is free parking with no time limits.



North Side of East Main Street (Between Market and Walnut Street):This zone is designated as 2-hour parking.



North Market Street:The east side, running 75 feet north from the Conrail Railroad, is designated as 2-hour parking.

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. While Memorial Day often marks the unofficial start of summer, its true purpose remains solemn, to recognize the profound courage and selflessness of those who gave their lives so that we may enjoy the freedoms we cherish today.

In our own community of Van Wert, we are reminded that service is a calling. We extend our deepest gratitude to the families of the fallen, whose own sacrifices are immeasurable. Your loved ones exemplify the highest standard of duty, and their legacy lives on through the peace and security we work to maintain every day.

As we spend time with our families and friends, let us take a moment of silence to reflect on the cost of our liberty.

Let's keep our holiday weekend joyful, legal, and safe for everyone! The Van Wert Police Department has put together a friendly guide for consumer fireworks discharge over the holiday weekend.

Here is what you need to know:
Approved Dates and Times~
Saturday, May 23rd
Sunday, May 24th
Monday, May 25th (Memorial Day)

Allowed Hours:
Strictly between 4:00 PM and 11:00 PM only.

Location Rules~
You can only discharge fireworks on your own private property, OR on another person's property if the owner has given you express permission.
Discharging fireworks on public streets, sidewalks, parks, or school grounds is strictly prohibited.

This week is National Police Week, and we were honored to have Mayor Ken Markward visit the department to present us with an official proclamation.

Under the leadership of Chief Doug Weigle, our officers are proud to serve the City of Van Wert. This proclamation is a great reminder of the partnership between our local government and the department as we work together to keep our community safe.

National Police Week is an important time for us to reflect on our commitment to the profession and to thank you, the citizens of Van Wert, for the support you show us year-round. It was a privilege to have the Mayor recognize the hard work and dedication of our team.
