🔥 Open Burning Reminder 🔥

The Mexico Community Fire Association would like to remind everyone to review IDEM’s open burning rules before starting any outdoor fire.

🚫 Burning trash is illegal in Indiana.
Do not burn:
• Household garbage
• Plastics or packaging
• Construction debris
• Furniture or treated lumber
• Any other waste materials

Allowed open burning must follow IDEM requirements:
• Burn only approved materials such as clean wood, brush, and leaves
• Keep the fire attended at all times
• Have water or fire suppression equipment nearby
• Do not burn during dry conditions, high winds, or burn bans
• Do not allow smoke to create a hazard or nuisance

Burning after dark is not permitted for most residential open burning. Fires should be extinguished before sunset and never left burning unattended overnight.

Earlier this evening, members of the Mexico Community Fire Association participated in our monthly training, with this month’s focus centered on search and rescue operations. Training like this is essential to ensuring our members are prepared to respond efficiently and safely when every second counts.

While every member isn’t pictured due to prior obligations each training provides an opportunity to sharpen our skills, and strengthen the relationships within our department.

A special thank you to Mexico New Life Church for opening its facility for our training. As pictured, our members used alternate tools to complete the training while preventing damage to the facility. Your continued support of our department and community is greatly appreciated!

🚑 Become an Emergency Medical Responder🚑

Have you ever wanted to help your community during emergencies? Now is a great opportunity to earn your Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification!

Lutheran EMS is offering EMR courses this summer, and if you are associated with the Mexico Community Fire Association, your tuition will be covered by our department! That’s a $150 value at no cost to you.

Whether you’re interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter, helping on medical calls, or simply gaining lifesaving skills, this course is a great way to get started.

⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER REMINDER ⚠️

As severe weather season continues, we want to remind everyone that the Mexico Community Fire Association station is not designated as a public severe weather shelter and should not be relied upon as a place of refuge during tornado warnings or other severe weather emergencies.

During severe weather events, our firefighters may be responding to emergencies, monitoring conditions, or preparing apparatus for response. Because of these operational responsibilities, we cannot guarantee that personnel will be at the station or available to provide shelter.

We encourage all residents to have a severe weather plan in place before storms occur. Identify a safe location in your home, such as a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor away from windows. If you live in a mobile home, make arrangements in advance to seek shelter in a sturdier structure when severe weather is expected.

Stay informed by monitoring local weather alerts and warnings from trusted sources.

Your safety is our priority, and being prepared before severe weather strikes is the best way to protect yourself and your family.

The Mexico Community Fire Association is proud and extremely grateful to announce that we have received a generous grant from the SIA Foundation!

Thanks to their incredible support, our department was able to purchase:

5 New Structural Fire Helmets – providing our firefighters with modern, high-quality head protection to help keep them safe on every emergency response.

2 Electric Vehicle (EV) Suppression Blankets – a specialized piece of equipment designed to help contain and control electric vehicle battery fires.

With this purchase, we are now one of only a few fire departments in Miami County equipped with EV suppression blankets. As electric vehicles continue to become more common on our roadways, having this advanced equipment allows us to better protect our firefighters, residents, and visitors by providing a safer and more effective response to EV-related incidents.

We were honored to officially accept this grant from the SIA Foundation and cannot thank them enough for their commitment to supporting first responders and enhancing community safety.

This investment not only strengthens our department’s capabilities today, but also helps ensure we are prepared for the challenges of tomorrow.

On June 11th, members of the Mexico Community Fire Association took part in our monthly training night. This month’s training focused on water supply operations, including hydrant operations, pump operations, and transferring water between apparatus.

Training is an important part of what we do. It helps our members stay sharp, build confidence, and identify areas where we can continue to improve. While we hope we never face a major fire involving one of our local businesses, preparing for those types of emergencies is exactly why we train.

The Mexico Community Fire Association remains committed to protecting the lives and property of those we serve throughout Jefferson Township and ensuring our firefighters are ready when called upon.

We would also like to thank Peru Utilities for their continued work maintaining our fire hydrants and Norco Industries for allowing us to use their parking lot for this valuable training opportunity.
