Ok, seriously, don’t care if you are on or off base, no leftover fire works, don’t be burning that grass pile or using explosives targets at the makeshift range. Be thoughtful and careful around fire, mowers etc

we love seeing your faces, we love responding with our community partners.. we just don’t want you to accidentally take out the houses on your block in the process.

Skills drills while blind folded. Crews practiced their skill sets using only verbal communication and touch. This builds teamwork, communication, and confidence for members assigned to their truck for the shift.

As Montana has a healthy Buffalo 🦬 (bison) population, and the weather is (sorta) warming up. This weeks safety briefing is brought to you by our friends at National Park Service.

Think of the paperwork. Remember to treat wildlife with proper caution and respect, plus no one likes an unflattering selfie. The safety of these animals, as well as your safety, depends on everyone using good judgment. In conclusion, choices. Make good ones.

As the sub-zero temps continue, training does not stop. Rookie Firemen practice their skills removing a patient from a simulated window rescue. We call this VEIS which stands for Vent, Enter, Isolate, and Search. This allows firemen to quickly search viable areas for potentially trapped victims and remove them to safety.

It might be cold... Ok, Queen Elsa (Frozen) is wanting a jacket right now it is so cold. However, this story is good to remind everyone to always be careful around ice. Always check conditions, tell people if you are going out, and prepare if you fall in by accident.

Just in case, our Ice Rescue Technicians will respond on and off base to get you help if you get into trouble.

Sets-n-reps for the 3-levels. The focus was the search and rescue of a large commercial structure with 2 unaccounted for. They accomplished their objectives and worked on communication skills.

A-shift learning quick removal technique with Denver Drill training!

The Denver drill was created based off the line of duty death of Engineer Mark Langvardt of the Denver Fire Department in Colorado, 1992. In this Incident, firefighter Langvardt reportedly became separated from his crew when the floor collapsed on a commercial structure fire. He was trapped in a small room filled with several filing cabinets on the second floor. Firefighters were unable to remove Langvardt in time due to the confined space and he was overcome by smoke. This drill replicates this scenario to teach technique of removing a downed firefighter through a window from a confined space.

Today, Malmstrom FD helped our brother's and sitters up at Great Falls Airport Firefighters IAFF Local 3261 say goodbye to a love one. We (MFD) were asked to help document the event with our Public Information Officer (PIO) team. We got a lot of video and stuff to edit and will take a few days to edit, but here is a couple still clips from the done as the procession was coming into the Cemetary.

As conditions cool off, B-shift took some time to refresh our crews and introduce some new firefighters to the departments ice rescue 🛟 equipment including our new ice (water) rescue boat.

We will be hosting our yearly full training course (refresher and initial certification) normally after the new year.

End of an era at Malmstrom today. Our Assistant chief of Fire Prevention put up his helmet for the last time today after 41 years in the fire service between active duty and Federal Civilian time; with 26 at MFD.

Good sir you have developed and molded many a firefighter over the years, you will always be family and please save some fish for the rest of us as you enjoy retirement.

Might be a family day for the base but B-shift is making use of decent weather for some Fire engineer (Driver/Operator) certification.

One of the IFSAC/ProBoard requirements is to be able to “draft” out of a water source.

Draft duck 🦆 : when drafting a small vortex can be made resulting in air being pumped into the pump. A quick fix is to use a ball (basket/volleyball) to disrupt it. Magically the ball, kept walking away so we a dedicated rubber ducky to fill this roll.

Resident Search pups 🐶 taking a break from training in the fire training area yesterday afternoon.

A-Shift just finished on live fire training giving a good real world scenario. We hid some “training material” in the burn area and had k9 bane do a search of the building simulating searching a structure for human remains. This is a handy ability to have, such as if you had an abandoned building fire and trying to ensure no one was inside.

K9 Bane (left) and retired k9 Bailee are trained in Area Live Fine and HRD (Human Remains detection). So unlike a blood hound trailing someone in a corn field, they will just find everyone in the corn field. This allows them to apply the same skills in Urban, disaster and wilderness scenarios and adds a unique resource to the Fire Department.

It requires weekly training and typically takes about 18months to train a “new dog” to certification level. If you need volunteers hours, we are always looking for people to “go hide”.
