“I support bringing a skate park back to Manchester. Our city lost one and still needs it. But with costs possibly exceeding $5.5 million, we need to make sure this project is fiscally responsible, transparent, and sustainable.
“The solution is not to pay for this over 20 years at a huge markup. The solution is to change the funding model and invite nonprofits, local businesses, and community leaders to help fund and maintain the project.”
I couldn’t agree more with this excerpt, and with this entire article by Troy Micklon! There are logical, common sense ways to achieve what we all want for our city. Defaulting to debt should never be the case. In personal finance, we know “cash is king.” Our city should operate by and default to this same principle.
If you bought a $500 TV on a credit card with 20% interest, which then took you 5 years to pay off, you would have paid another nearly $300 for that TV. Now you’ve paid $800 for the TV instead of $500. The same concept applies when bonding for city projects and expenses. The less we operate in needless debt, the more resources we’ll have for future endeavors and necessary services.
For the sake of the future of our city and communities, we need more people with this principle and logic on the board of aldermen!
