Who is funding growth in Coffee County?
We came across this flyer for a recent Home Builders Association of Central Tennessee PAC fundraiser held in Manchester. Keep in mind, the purpose of a PAC (political action committee) is to fund candidates to run and support policies that benefit the homebuilders association.
The event was advertised as supporting “Responsible Growth in Central TN” and lists several development-related companies as sponsors. All of whom, do not support ‘responsible growth’ through their monetary donations and support, as we see it anyways.
There is nothing improper about developers participating in the political process. In fact, every stakeholder has a right to advocate for their interests.
However, citizens also have a right to understand who is funding political activity, who is attending these events, and how those relationships may influence future conversations about zoning, development, infrastructure, and land use.
As Coffee County continues discussing growth, data centers, farmland preservation, housing, infrastructure, and zoning regulations, transparency matters.
Some questions worth asking:
• Which local elected officials, candidates, or appointees attended?
• Which local campaigns has this PAC supported?
• What specific policies does the PAC advocate for?
• How do those priorities align or conflict with the priorities of Coffee County residents?
• What does “responsible growth” mean to developers, and what does it mean to the families who live here
• And WHY do these clearly pro- rural growth/development folks keep trying to take our “responsible growth” phrase! 😂
We don’t expect an answer for that last question, but as we have said over and over growth isn’t inherently good or bad. The details matter.
An informed community asks questions, follows the facts, notices the names on the flyers, and stays engaged.
What are your thoughts?
