Today I had the privilege to sit down with Will Gardner and discuss politics….sort of 😉. Will invited me to participate on his show which will broadcast tonight on BEK tv.

Will and his wife Laura are realtors and Will is also on the Mandan planning and Zoning Commission. Today we touched on a few topics relating to future growth of Mandan and why we love our city so much!

I want to thank Will for this opportunity, I really enjoyed the conversation. Remember to get out and vote June 9th, I sure appreciate the support!

Tonight (Thursday 9pm) on Open Range Real Estate edition I am interviewing Mandan City Commission candidate Heidi Belohlavek on real estate topics. If you're a candidate interested in being on the show, please contact me.

Got out and walked some more streets this evening and was asked some good questions by residents. I appreciate when I can hear their perspectives.

Btw, who ordered this cold? And I bet you wouldn’t believe me when I said I found the last snowbank….so I took a photo!

My walking partner was the best tonight ❤️

A couple weeks ago I met with Shane, the director of Public works. He took me on a tour of the facility and talked about some of their departments tasks, struggles and future plans. Shane has only been with the department for a short period of time and he talks highly about his staff and what he would like to see in the future.

Public works will be hosting an open house this Thursday and I suggest taking a little time to go and meet Shane, ask question and get a first hand look at their equipment and facilities.

What a beautiful night for a walk. I hit up sections of Lewis and Clark neighborhood. It is amazing how little a neighborhood looks on a map compared to its size when you actually walk it! Less than 1 month away until Election Day! Lots of ground to still cover.

Last week I met with both the Assessing department and the Finance department to get an idea of what is working well for them and where they feel change would be helpful.

Kimberly with Assessing explained that every year their department picks an area of town and performs a zone review on properties. This is where they go to every house in an area and take measurements of homes and try to get inside the homes to take a glance. The purpose of this visit isn't so they can raise your taxes, but rather to make sure the information they have on their property cards matches the property. She mentioned when they switched systems, not all the information came through accurately and they just want to make sure everyone is being properly assessed. This year, they will be working in the Terra Vallee subdivision. Kimberly also mentioned that when letters go out each year with the expected value, if landowners have questions or doubt their predicted assessment, she wants landowners to call their office. She welcomes all calls and visits and wants to make sure it is all accurate.

Greg and Justin from the finance department were very informative in our meeting. They talked about how the city is working on a 10 year plan for projects and budgets and how they can sustain their funding when markets and economies are ever changing. Not so long ago, the City didn't really have a "fast forward" plan so it made it difficult to plan for big budgets items. They are proud of the progress the departments and commission have made in their planning processes and they recognize there are many challenges in the world of budgets, especially when some of the resources are unknown from year to year (federal funding, grant money, sales tax, etc.).

I appreciate that both of these departments were able to sit down and visit with me and give me some more insight as to the day to day challenges and successes. Having more insight and knowledge will only lead to better decisions.

I had a good helper tonight while I was out canvassing a neighborhood. The cool evening made for a perfect walk. I still have about 50 signs left so if you want to support me and make your yard more colorful, reach out to me!

Last night the candidates for city commission participated in a debate hosted by the League of Women Voters. I will be honest in saying that I have never participated in an event like this and I was very nervous of how I would fair against the other candidates. I will be the first to say that I am not a “political speaker.” 😂

What I took away from this debate was that I have a lot to learn and lots of room to grow in my public speaking presentations. But what I can also say is that even though I may not have represented myself as well as I had hoped, that doesn’t mean I will perform the duties of City Commissioner in the same way, in fact, I have the utmost confidence in my capabilities as a representative of this great city! I am just a real person going through the same growing pains as all other taxpayers, but with the determination to be a great asset. I am here to work hard for you and for our City. I would greatly appreciate your vote and your support in my journey!

If you feel so inclined, I encourage you to watch the debate to see how each of the candidates stand on certain issues. As always, you should research each person and each issue so you can go to the polls well informed.
