As a reminder, all Texas central appraisal districts are now required by Senate Bill 1801 to confirm exemptions every 5 years, effective September 1, 2023. Tarrant Appraisal District has already begun notifying homeowners in Quadrant 1 and has requested documentation to confirm continued eligibility. Read the January 19 blog for details, including a map of the boundary lines for Quadrant 1. If you live in this Quadrant and did not receive a request or possibly threw it away by accident, contact Tarrant Appraisal District immediately.

Please do not ignore this request. Homeowners receiving this notice must respond by December 31, 2024. Don’t delay! Failure to return the requested documentation may result in the removal of cancellation of the associated exemptions on your property. It is the property owner’s responsibility to respond to this request for confirmation of continued eligibility.

Did you know? If you own a home and occupy it as your primary residence, you may qualify for the homestead exemption to lower your property taxes. Your tax amount is calculated by multiplying the tax rates adopted by the taxing jurisdictions by the value assessed by Tarrant Appraisal District less the exemption amount. Tarrant County residents apply for the homestead exemption through Tarrant Appraisal District, not the Tax Office. https://www.tad.org/homestead-exemption

On your tax bill, you will see “HS001” at the top left indicating the Homestead Exemption. This is also where you will find codes of other exemptions, such as Over 65 and Disability.

Online, you will see the Homestead Exemption from the “View More” tab on your account details page. Per Texas Tax Code 25.027, the Over 65 exemption is not published online.

Learn more about exemptions from the State Comptroller’s website at https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/property-tax/exemptions/.

Happy New Year! Does this sticker look familiar? It's time to renew your Texas vehicle registration if it expires in January 2024.

VEHICLE INSPECTION

A passing vehicle inspection is required prior to registration renewal. For registration due to be renewed in January 2024, a passing vehicle inspection must be obtained on or after November 3, 2023.

HOW TO RENEW YOUR REGISTRATION

Registration may be renewed online, using the Texas by Texas website or mobile app for iOS and Android devices, by mail, and in person. Complete information about registration renewal is available at https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/register-your-vehicle.

💻 Online: Renew online at https://renew.txdmv.gov/ or www.Texas.gov. As of January 1, 2022, online renewal is available up to twelve months past your registration expiration date. Please allow adequate time for processing and mail delivery, often approximately ten business days.

📱 Texas by Texas (TxT) mobile application, available in the App Store and Google Play store. Texas by Texas is available to everyone on the TxT website at https://txt.texas.gov.

Annual vehicle registration renewal is available through the TxT mobile application. You may also renew your vehicle registration electronically using Texas by Texas: You don’t have to download the mobile app to use TxT. You can create an account, sign in to an existing account, and complete transactions on the web or mobile app.

Vehicle Registration Renewal (English) https://txt.texas.gov/dmv/vehicle-registration-renewal
Renovación del registro de vehículos de Texas (Español) https://txt.texas.gov/es/dmv/renovacion-registro-vehiculo

To learn more about TxT, visit www.texas.gov/texas-by-texas/.

📩 By Mail: Return the bottom portion of your registration renewal form, payment and other required information to your county tax assessor-collector. Motorists choosing to renew by mail need to allow adequate time for mail delivery and processing, which varies by county.

🏤 In Person: Local county tax offices may offer services by appointment only. Please contact your local county tax office for assistance with any new policies or procedures before you go. Find your local county tax office online: https://www.txdmv.gov/tax-assessor-collectors/county-tax-offices.

🏪 In certain counties, registration renewal services may be available in additional locations, such as grocery stores, AAA offices, or title companies. Please contact your local county tax office for more information about this option.

🔌🚘 IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE OWNERS

The cost of registering fully electric vehicles in Texas increased September 1, 2023. Senate Bill 505, passed by the Texas Legislature during the 88th Regular Session, adds a $200 annual fee for electric vehicle registration. The new fee is in addition to standard vehicle registration fees and any tax otherwise due for the vehicle and does not apply to hybrid vehicles that use a combination of gasoline and electric.

Registration renewals for fully electric vehicles completed before September 1, 2023, will not be subject to the fee until their next registration renewal in 2024.
