My husband can’t find hydrogen peroxide at the pharmacy today. He uses it to prevent mouth sores caused by his cancer drugs. So I went down a rabbit hole to find out why there’s a shortage. Turns out the war in Iran is probably a big factor. Peroxide is very energy-intensive to make —and there’s high demand because many industrial processes rely on it, including water purification. When “input” costs spike—in this case, the cost of oil and natural gas— chemical companies pull back on manufacturing because customers might not tolerate a price increase. So far, only a few people visiting our tables have talked about the war. Maybe it seems far away when there are so many problems close to home… but for me, the impact of the war is right there on the pharmacy shelf. Made me think differently about how policy decisions made in Washington actually touch our everyday lives.

AND FOR OTHERS THE WAR IS HORRIBLY CLOSE. I feel pain for the families of Isabella Gonzales (19) and Tyler James Feehan (25), who just lost their lives. And I think about a young woman we met recently at one of our tables who graduated high school in June and is about to enlist. I asked how she came to that decision. She said it’s because generations in her family have served. I wonder if she has seen this picture of Isabella.
