Thank you to the voters of Marion for your support! According to unofficial results I won. I couldn’t be more honored to get to serve this community and to continue supporting our amazing administration, teachers, and staff.

The Polls are open today until 8pm at the Benjamin D. Cushing Community Center (465 Mill Street).

Your vote would mean a lot to me. Remember you can vote for up to two candidates.

Here's a little more about me and my candidacy from The Wanderer article out now.

I’m Nichole Nye McGaffey and I’m running for one of two Marion School Committee seats up for election. I first got involved with the Committee last year as a write-in candidate for a one-year vacancy. No one expressed interested in serving and I didn’t want to leave the committee underrepresented.

I grew up in Marion and attended both Sippican School and Old Rochester. I know firsthand that the quality of education we provide the students of Marion is outstanding. It’s a point of pride for this community and a reason people want to live here. I’m passionate about making sure that continues.

It’s the job of the school committee to ensure that our administration and faculty have the resources needed to continue to provide the students of Marion with an excellent education within a safe and supportive school community. That’s the mindset I bring to the committee. I attend each meeting open-minded, ready to listen, and ready to help where I can. As a juris doctorate and the only member of the committee that doesn’t have a child attending school in the district, I believe I bring an important and unique perspective to the committee.

I’m not running with the support of a local political party or with a political agenda. I have a deep love for this town that has been and will always be home to me and my family. My family has a long legacy of service to this community that I’m very proud of. I’m looking for my own ways to serve it.

The work I’m most proud to have supported over the last year includes the wonderful work that Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Dr. Shari Fedorowicz is doing to get the school on a district-wide literacy program to allow us to share resources and data across the district, the satellite police office at Sippican that Superintendent Nelson and Chief Nighelli spearheaded as a creative solution to our current budget constraints, and efforts to clarify our public comments policy to ensure transparency, accountability, and community involvement.

Thank you, Marion! Your support for the school’s capital projects, our modest budget increase (driven by an increase in transportation and utilities costs), and the addition of a School Resource Officer at Sippican as outlined in the Police budget,
is much appreciated.

Tonight at our Marion School Committee meeting all members in attendance voted to support a memorandum of understanding Superintendent Nelson proposed to guide the implementation of a School Resource Officer at Sippican for the 2023-2024 school year.

MARION — Marion voters packed into the Sippican School multi-purpose room on Monday, May 8 and had their say on 34 items on the 2024 Spring Town Meeting agenda. Every item on the agenda was passed by the town. Voters approved Marion’s $27,516,635...

I was recently asked for my thoughts on the initiative to ban books at Old Rochester.

I’m an avid reader who wholeheartedly believes in the power of books. To Kill A Mockingbird, a book I read as a student at Old Rochester, is a story about an lawyer fighting to right injustices. Many have tried to get it banned since its publication in 1960. It’s one of my favorite books and it had a significant impact on my career aspirations and how I viewed the world. I wanted to be Atticus Finch.

I believe librarians are the most qualified candidates to decide what material should appear in our school libraries. I also believe that as a parent you have every right to decide what books your child reads. That’s why I support our current school library policy which allows librarians to make decisions for our schools and empowers parents to make decisions for their children.

I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion about the budget, the wonderful work that Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Dr. Shari Fedorowicz is doing to get the school on a district-wide literacy program, and the success of the satellite police office at Sippican that Superintendent Nelson and Chief Nighelli spearheaded. The article is available today in the print version of Sippican Week as well. Thanks for taking the time to speak with me Sawyer!

MARION — The race is on for two open seats on the Marion School Committee, and three local residents have declared their candidacy for the posts. Incumbent Nichole Nye McGaffey is running for her second term on the Marion School Committee. She was a...
