Friends of the Indian Boundary Prairies

Friends of the Indian Boundary Prairies The Friends of the Indian Boundary Prairies is a volunteer group dedicated to the restoration and pr Department of the Interior in 1988.

The Indian Boundary Prairies of Markham, Illinois, lie just south of Chicago. These dedicated Illinois Nature Preserves exemplify some of the best remnant, high-quality tallgrass prairie in the Midwest. There are five separate prairies, easily accessed and within a half mile of one another: Gensburg-Markham, Sundrop, Paintbrush, Dropseed and the tract known as Markham East. These prairies are own

ed and managed by Northeastern Illinois University, The Nature Conservancy, and the Natural Land Institute. Because of its importance, the Gensburg-Markham Prairie was designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Each site offers the visitor its own unique character and beauty, as well as a wide variety of native plants and animals.

Friends. We have always benefitted from the generosity of others. Now we want to pay it forward. Are there other any environmental groups doing good work in natural areas that you suggest we would be able to donate to? Please message us here or at [email protected]. Thanks for your help.

This coming Saturday, April 29, 2023, the Friends will be participating in Midlothian Clean-Up. We have always been grateful to the Village of Midlothian for being a good neighbor to the prairies (Sundrop Prairie is bordered on 2 sides by Midlothian, and the northwest side of Paintbrush Prairie is bordered by Midlothian). Through the years, due to the generosity of the village, we have been able to dispose of some rather large items found on the prairies. To support the village we will be taking on assignments throughout the village, wherever they need us. We will be meeting at the village garage at 9:00 a.m. For more information see the Village website. Come out and meet some Friends!

This event is designed to bring residents and community members together to clean up and beautify our Village.  Tasks such as clearing overgrown vegetation, picking up trash and clearing debris are just a few ways we can keep Midlothian looking its best.

A little walk on a little prairie. It's apparent that a contract prescribed burn was done in the wetland this past fall. If you're squeamish you might not want to come upon a dead animal. But it is as much a part of nature as the plants and various critters you may discover in a prairie wetland.

If you're interested in learning more, or having a tour of one of the preserves, drop us a line at [email protected], visit our website at www.ibprairies.org, or message here.
