Transparent letter to our state representatives:
I want to reassure our parents that this letter does not mean our district is currently facing a funding shortfall. Our schools are operating as planned.
My intent was simply to urge state leaders to provide long-term stability and clarity for public education funding. Advocating now helps prevent problems later.
Thank you for your continued support of our schools:
Subject: Our Students Cannot Afford This Budget Deadlock
As of today, North Carolina is still operating without a 2025–2027 state budget. While the state previously allocated $17.9 billion for education in 2024-25, current funding is constrained, with NC ranking 50th nationally in public school funding.
As a school board member, I can tell you firsthand — this uncertainty is hurting our schools.
Teachers are receiving only step increases instead of meaningful raises. Exceptional children’s services are facing shortfalls. Districts are trying to plan responsibly without knowing what funding will ultimately look like.
Meanwhile, North Carolina now ranks 50th out of 51 (including D.C.) in public school funding, with a 13% decline in inflation-adjusted per-student funding since 2003.
This isn’t about politics. It’s about priorities.
Our teachers deserve stability. Our students — especially those who require specialized services — deserve consistent support. And our communities deserve leadership that puts children first.
I respectfully urge our state leaders to reach a resolution and pass a comprehensive budget that prioritizes public education.
Our students cannot afford to wait.
Respectfully,
John Bratz
Member, Madison County Board of Education
