There was a recent post made by a previous candidate for the School District of Marshfield Board of Education regarding the parking fee assessed to eligible Marshfield High School students.

I took the time to contact the Business Services office and the High School office in an effort to get some answers regarding this fee. This information is being shared from me as an individual board member based on what I learned from my personal inquiry into this particular issue. The following is what I learned:

1. The fee is not available for payment in Skyward because the school wants to ensure they collect the fee. Unfortunately, fees assessed in Skyward often sit unpaid. Case in point, overdue school lunch fees that were reported by the News Herald this spring. By requiring this fee to be paid via cash or check, the school ensures that every student with a valid parking pass has paid the fee for the privilege of parking in the lot. Additionally, there is a paper form that must be filled out when requesting a parking pass.

2. The school does not police the lot checking for valid parking passes. The school does partner with law enforcement to monitor the lot as law enforcement sees fit. When law enforcement does this, they have the authority to issue tickets to vehicles in the student parking lot that do not have valid parking passes.

3. Students must be present when a parking pass is issued so the school can verify the validity of their driver's license and gather necessary information such as license plate numbers for the vehicles the student will be driving and a signature from the student acknowledging the rules associated with the privilege of parking in the student parking lot.

4. The fee goes to offset parking lot maintenance and fees associated with the passes such as the cost of plowing, restriping the lot, processing the pass requests, the physical passes themselves etc. From what I understand, it is not a line item in the budget, but rather is a small piece of the overall general operations fund.

5. The parking fee has been in place as far back as 1998. It is not a new fee instituted in recent history. There may have been an increase in the cost of the fee over the years, but it has been a fee assessed by the district for the privilege of parking in the student lot for many years.

6. A parking fee is a common fee assessed by high schools throughout the state of Wisconsin and is not unique to our district.

I ran on a platform of accountability, stewardship, and voice. As an elected board member, I remain committed to those values as I represent the voice of the community on our Board of Education.

It is official!

I spent a couple of hours on Tuesday going through district board orientation and a couple of hours last night at our regional board orientation learning the ropes and meeting other new board members from our surrounding districts.

I am looking forward to my first meeting as a board member in May!

We did it!

I am incredibly grateful to everyone who supported my campaign for the School Board. Earning 2nd place is a proud achievement, and I am honored by the trust and votes I received from this community.

If you have a yard sign on your property, feel free to leave it up as we will be coming by to pick them up throughout the week. Thank you for displaying your support for my campaign!

I look forward to continuing to support our district and our students in every way I can!

Election day is tomorrow!

We are down to the last of 1,700 handouts, have 145+ signs across our community, sent 4,000+ postcards and have walked countless miles canvassing, attended numerous township meetings, and had so many meaningful conversations with community members along the way.

Thank you to everyone who has opened your door, made a donation, shared your perspective, and supported this campaign. Your encouragement and trust mean so much to me.

A special thank you to my family, especially my husband and children, who sacrificed countless hours of their time and energy to support this campaign, from going door to door canvassing to traveling all over the district meticulously checking signs. I am also deeply grateful to my in-laws, who took time to go door to door on my behalf and helped build support through yard sign placement. I truly could not have done this without them.

I am hopeful for tomorrow and for the future of our schools. It has been an honor to earn your vote!

Please remember to vote Faith Meyers tomorrow!

My wonderful campaign manager went around and checked all of my signs this afternoon after the ice storm! Thankfully only a few succumbed to the elements.

Check out that sheet of ice!
