Martinez Area CERT

Martinez Area CERT CERT is about disaster readiness, people helping people, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number.

Disasters can strike at any time and being prepared for these and other unexpected events is critical to saving lives. Each one of us has a responsibility to understand the risk natural and man-made disasters pose to our communities, and to recognize we each have a role in preparing for these events. We have a duty to build a Culture of Preparedness in which our neighbors, families and friends are ready for any disaster event, and to make our communities safer, stronger, and better prepared.

Burn injuries don’t just happen at work; they can happen at home, too. Scald injuries can affect anyone at any age, and children, older adults, and people with disabilities are especially at risk.

Hot bath water, coffee, tea, and even microwaved soup can cause serious, life-changing injuries. Scalds are the second leading cause of burn injuries.

Following guidance from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), simple steps like testing bath water, keeping hot drinks out of reach, letting food cool before eating, and turning pot handles inward can help prevent injuries.

Behind every red fire extinguisher is a carefully engineered life saving system.

What we often see as a simple safety tool is actually a combination of precise mechanics, pressure science, and human-centered design working together for one purpose: to control fire in seconds and protect lives.

From the pressure vessel and valve assembly to the hose, nozzle, and dry chemical agent, every component plays a critical role. When activated, stored pressure converts into controlled force, delivering the extinguishing agent exactly where it’s needed fast, reliable, and effective.

This is a powerful reminder that fire safety is not accidental. It’s the result of engineering discipline, standards compliance, regular inspection, and user awareness. A well-maintained extinguisher can be the difference between a minor incident and a major disaster.

As safety professionals, engineers, and responders, our responsibility goes beyond installation we must ensure training, inspection, and readiness at all times.

Fire doesn’t give a second chance. Preparation does.
