I need to brag about the staff at WellSpring. They work tirelessly to ease the suffering of those facing homelessness. Today they went out visiting encampments to get a good count of the unsheltered in our county. They offered a hot meal at lunch to bring people into the shelter and worked with Churches in Mission to bring a warm meal to their Mooresville location to get those who are truly unsheltered fed and counted. This yearly count is important, because it helps bring funding to all agencies assisting with homelessness in Morgan County.
After a long day out in the cold and snow, Executive Director Jennifer Mullin Burnam stayed after the board meeting to help serve dinner to the individuals calling our lobby home through this extreme weather. Her commitment and passion for WellSpring’s mission and her love for our guests is awe inspiring. Our case managers Aly and Jan are just as awesome. The three if them solve a million problems a day, see and hear things that could break your soul, and give so much love.
BTW - our winter contingency guests were served a home cooked meal of fried chicken, green beans & potatoes, and noodles made by WellSpring’s housekeeper - who truly acts as house mother to our guests.
As you can imagine, this is not a 9-5 job. Operating the shelter is 24/7/365. We will be hosting our contingency guests (around 8 people at this time) probably for the next several weeks. I wish we had rooms for everyone, but the staff is making the lobby as welcoming and comfortable as possible.
If you feel so inclined, please consider a donation to WellSpring - whether funds or a donation in kind. We can always use blankets, hand warmers, gloves, gift certificates (Rural King, Wal-Mart, Amazon) so we can purchase snow suits, sleeping bags, boots, etc for those in need.
We also urge you to donate food to The Red Barn. WellSpring would not have the honor of hosting our winter contingency guests without the connections we made through Patty’s hard work. She has fed and assisted our unsheltered neighbors for many years. Kroger has lots of items for 99 cents - Campbells soup, Chef Boyardee (perfect as they are tabbed tops, no can oorner needed), SunnyD, Swanson Broth, VanCamp pork and beans. We could really load her pantry if everyone purchased $20 worth of food to drop by the Red Barn. Just call to coordinate dropping off your donation. (765) 342-9063
