With each passing night at the Compass House, Clifford found himself sleeping better and better. Every morning before school, he had a full breakfast which helped alleviate the morning stomach aches he had grown accustomed to over the past few weeks. Clifford didn't fully realize it until weeks later, but getting a good night's sleep was allowing him to stay awake during class and it left him energy in his tank for basketball and other activities after school.

Where's Clifford?
Upon arrival at the Compass House, Clifford was offered something to eat, a chance to wash his clothes and a bed to choose as his own. Clifford was also informed that staff would need to contact his parents, inform them where he was and that he was safe and also obtain their permission for him to stay at the Compass House. Clifford needed to fill out some paperwork that he didn't like very much but staff took their time with it and they made him feel comfortable. After days and weeks on the street, Clifford was relieved to finally be in a warm and clean space...free of conflict and chaos.

Where's Clifford?

No longer able to cope with his horrendous living situation, Clifford realized he could no longer travel this road alone. Clifford decided to confide to his school guidance counselor about all he had endured the past two months. Thankfully, his school counselor knew about the Compass House, the youth shelter in Canton for runaway and homeless teen boys and she made a call to the house to arrange a bed for Clifford.

Where's Clifford?
Feeling he had been 'busted' at school and unable to rent a suitable apartment on his own, Clifford decided to answer an ad on a website for a bedroom that was available to rent. After explaining his situation to the middle-aged man, Clifford agreed to do housework and 'favors' as needed, in exchange for a room. After a few weeks, the small favors turned into unwanted s*xual advances. Clifford soon found himself involved in "survival s*x" until he could come up with another living situation.

Although homeless, Clifford always made it to school. It was safe, clean and he could always get a meal and shower there. Later, Clifford found out that 99% of homeless teens still attend school because it's the one place where they know they'll be safe. However, Clifford found it difficult to focus because he could barely stay awake. One of his teachers noticed his inability to stay awake and also noticed he was wearing the same clothes day after day. Concerned, she sent him to speak with his school counselor. Clifford was afraid to report his homeless situation. He was afraid the police would be called or he'd be placed in foster care, so he only told his counselor that things were 'tough' at home but he'd be ok.

Where's Clifford?

Often hungry, Clifford would scavenge through dumpsters looking for food to eat. He quickly learned which stores and restaurants threw out the most food. One day, Clifford came across a "Free Hot Meal" sign at a local church. While at the church, he tried to gather information about where he could find shelter, but was discouraged to hear the men's shelter was usually full and he had to be at least 18 years old.

Where's Clifford?

In an effort to stay safe, Clifford sought out places where he could blend in. He would go to WalMart and walk the aisles for hours. One day he rode the SARTA for hours until he sensed the bus driver was becoming suspicious of him. Clifford also hung out at the library, plucking a random book form the shelf and pretending to read it. He actually was catching a few zzz's since he hadn't slept for over 24 hours.

After spending a few weeks couch surfing at friends, Clifford soon found himself without a roof over his head. Feeling lost and alone, Clifford wandered the streets and parks, trying to keep under the radar.

WHERE'S CLIFFORD ?
Mentally tired, spiritually broken and physically hungry, Clifford gathered his few belongings in his backpack and headed out into the shadows of the night...alone.
