Today is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and as National Police Week comes to an end, we take today especially to remember and honor all of the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The individuals who gave their lives protecting others. Without hesitation, putting their lives on the line for total strangers. These men and women are parents, children, siblings, friends, colleagues.

If you see an officer today - or any day - take a second to let them know that you appreciate them. We don’t do this job for the recognition, but knowing that support exists means so much.

Today especially, we honor those that paid the ultimate sacrifice answering The Call. Remember the heroes always.

Today we celebrated the retirement of Deputy Ed Eggan. Ed served Stark County for 11 years, after completing the demanding requirements of the police academy … IN HIS FIFTIES!! He serves as a reminder to never stop chasing your dreams, no matter how old you are.

Deputy Eggan was an always smiling face - especially at the court house, where he enjoyed serving much of his time with the sheriff’s office. Ed - you will be dearly missed, as will your Reese’s supply that you were always willing to share. Congrats on this milestone and enjoy retirement!

Congratulations are in order for two of our very own SCDA members!

Deputy Paul Hesson was recognized as the 2025 Deputy of the Year, and Deputy Kurtis Johnson received the 2025 Knights of Columbus Blue Coat Award. Both deputies have shown professionalism and integrity in their work, and their recognition is well deserved. They continue to show what great values and positive community policing do in our community, as well as within our agency. Congrats again to both Paul and Kurtis!

Congratulations to both of these new deputies! Welcome to the team!

Today marked the last day, and an end to 25 years of dedicated service, for Deputy Chad Carruthers. Chad was - and will remain - one of the most respected, knowledgeable, and reliable humans around, and we will miss him tremendously in our office. Congrats to Deputy Carruthers on retirement! Go enjoy it!
