🤝 Projects like this take a community.

The transformation of Mullen Park has brought together City employees, community organizations, volunteers and partners with a shared goal: creating a better place for McAlester families.

From major park improvements to the “Shade and Story” enhancements featuring native trees, irrigation and Story Walk features, a lot of work has gone into bringing the project to this point.

On Sept. 22, we get to celebrate everyone who helped make it possible.

Every playground, bench, tree, trail, ballfield and splash pad represents an investment in our community.

When equipment is damaged or vandalized, Parks crews spend valuable time making repairs instead of completing new improvements or routine maintenance throughout the park system.

Treating park amenities with care helps us make the most of every taxpayer dollar.

🐾 Today is National Dog Day, and we’re celebrating the pups who make our parks a little more fun!

Central Bark Dog Park gives dogs a place to run and play with separate fenced areas for large and small dogs, water, covered pavilions, waste stations and more.

We also had a little help showing you around from Indy! 🐶

Take a look around Central Bark in our latest video — and remember to help keep the park enjoyable for everyone by following the posted rules and cleaning up after your pup.

🌱 50 new reasons to enjoy the shade at Mullen Park.

One of the highlights of the park transformation is “Shade and Story: Transforming Mullen Park,” which adds another layer to the improvements already underway.

The project features:

🌳 50 Oklahoma native trees
💧 Irrigation improvements
📚 Story Walk features
🤝 Volunteer and community partnerships

As those trees grow, they'll provide more shade and help create a greener, more inviting park for generations of McAlester families.

And there’s still one final tree to plant.

Join us Sept. 22 as we celebrate the transformation and symbolically complete the project during “The Final Piece” Ribbon Cutting & Dedication.

🌳 50 new trees. 4,000 followers. One big celebration.

Help us Grow to 4K by Sept. 22!

Every park has a story.

Will Rogers Park has served generations of McAlester families, but its history stretches back even further than many people realize.

We're researching some fascinating chapters of the property's past and can't wait to share them with you soon—including what occupied this site before it became one of McAlester's most beloved parks.

Stay tuned... we think you'll enjoy this piece of McAlester history.

Our Parks & Recreation team works every day to keep McAlester's parks clean, safe and ready for the community to enjoy.

But with parks spread across the city, we can't be everywhere at once.

That's where you come in.

If you notice a maintenance issue during your next visit—whether it's damaged equipment, litter, graffiti or something else—please report it using the McAlester Connect app.

Your report is sent directly to the appropriate department, helping us identify issues sooner and respond more efficiently.

Thank you for being another set of eyes in our parks!

One of the easiest ways to make a difference takes less than a minute.

Throw away trash, return picnic areas to the way you found them and, if you notice a piece of litter nearby, consider picking it up too.

We're grateful for organizations like Keep McAlester Beautiful, the McAlester Community Tree Board, volunteers, civic groups and residents who dedicate countless hours to keeping our parks beautiful throughout the year. Their efforts remind us that caring for our parks is truly a community effort.

Laughter has a home at Will Rogers Park.

Nancy's Playground has become one of McAlester's favorite destinations for young families, offering modern play equipment designed to encourage children to climb, swing, explore and imagine.

The playground also features interactive musical elements that make every visit a little different.

Made possible through the generosity of the McGowan Family Foundation, Nancy's Playground is another example of how community partnerships continue to make McAlester's parks even better.

🌳 A lot has changed at Mullen Park.

The approximately $650,000 improvement project is about more than updating a park — it’s about creating a more welcoming, family-friendly community space for McAlester.

The project includes:

💦 Splash pad improvements
🏡 Pavilion upgrades
🚻 Restroom improvements
🌳 Expanded shade areas

And that’s only part of the story.

Additional improvements through “Shade and Story: Transforming Mullen Park” are bringing more trees, educational opportunities and community partnerships to the park.

We’ll celebrate it all at “The Final Piece” Ribbon Cutting & Dedication on Sept. 22.
