As one of the most regulated industries for the health, safety and sanitation of its employees and customers, a career in the foodservice industry begins with a certification in food and/or alcohol safety. Whether your experience or interest is in food preparation or in front-of-house service, all restaurant employees in Texas are required to have a valid food handler certification card.

To support the return of our industry's workforce post COVID-19 and welcome those interested in first-time foodservice employment, the Texas Restaurant Association, in partnership with the Texas Workforce Commission, is pleased to offer these certifications to Texas residents at no cost.

Texas Workforce Commission Attention: Julian Alvarez, Labor Commissioner 101 E 15th St., Austin, TX 78778 Dear Commissioner Alvarez, I am writing regarding my recent interaction with the employees who manage the TWC [email protected] email box, as well as two of your Fort Worth Customer Service Representatives, Mr. Lee Elder and his colleague, Angela. I relocated to Texas in October, 2018 from Sandy Hook, CT, a town that brought great trauma and PTSD. My MD suggested a move South and I chose TX for my new start. I’ve found the people here friendly, kind and willing to help. This leads me to the reason for this letter. Customer service is difficult in any industry and, as a customer service manager in a call center for 30+ years, corporate trainer and retention specialist, I expect the same service I provide to my own customers. During these very trying times, I am well-aware of the severe challenges your department has faced, and can only imagine the way these employees have been treated. People are scared and cannot get through to file and their financial situation is grim. I was able to find the email address via the TWC website and wrote, knowing my message would most likely be addressed in days, if not weeks. Treating people with respect is imperative and I recognize they are simply doing with what tools they are provided; my email was professional and understanding, and I received an immediate reply advising a rep would make contact shortly – and they did. I received a call from Mr. Lee Elder in your Ft. Worth office who guided me through the process of an error on my part. I would like to take a moment to recognize Mr. Elder who not only provided the help I needed to correct what I thought was irreversible, but the kindness I needed in a tumultuous situation. While I’m sure he was busy, and with other customer’s in his queue, I found him calming and being very alone in a strange city with no friends or family, told him how sad I was having to leave my young child behind. Mr. Elder listened and reassured me I was in the right place and his kindness was just what I needed. In that 15 minute call, I not only received resolution to my situation, but my day became better. Last week, I made a similar error and I contacted the email box once more, receiving a speedy reply (I think they remembered me!) and again... Mr. Elder called and, even though he makes hundreds of calls – remembered me. He resolved my situation and put a smile on my face. I feel I made a friend. Angela assisted me most recently and she is the epitome of grace under pressure. She assisted in resetting online profile so I’m now able to process online, and helped with back requests. She had a wonderful sense of humor and while I was having a meltdown, she assured me it would be ok. And it was. In this hurried world – especially now, when life is upside down and people live day-to-day, we are quick to complain and blame “the system.” However, we rarely take a moment to provide thanks to those who play a pivotal, behind-the-scenes role in assisting us, and who take the wrath of difficult times. I know, because I’ve been there and it’s not a very good feeling. Please be sure this letter reaches whomever oversees the email team as they need to feel they are appreciated for their efforts. Also, please insure a copy is forwarded to Mrs. Gloria Hardy who is the supervisor for Lee and Angela and who is lucky to have wonderful representatives in her department. Both teams provide superior service to those of us struggling during tumultuous times. I do hope you provide them the praise they richly deserve. Sincerely, Barbie Paquet Dallas Cc: Governor Greg Abbott, State of Texas
