COMMUNITY AWARENESS: SOCIAL MEDIA SCHOOL THREAT TREND

The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office is aware of a recent social media trend commonly referred to as the “Cat in the Hat” trend. Similar posts have circulated online naming or referencing schools, communities, and students in a threatening manner.

We want our students, parents, school staff, and community members to understand the seriousness of creating or sharing this type of content.

Any creation, reposting, sharing, or distribution of threatening content involving a Chesterfield County school or any other schools outside of Chesterfield County will not be tolerated. Even when someone claims a post was created as a joke or part of an online trend, sharing threatening content has the potential to create fear, disrupt school operations, divert law enforcement resources, and cause unnecessary chaos within our community.

If you encounter a post threatening or referencing violence toward any schools:

• DO NOT repost, share, or circulate the content.

• Preserve the original post, username, account information, and any other available information.

• Immediately notify law enforcement and the appropriate school administration.

Students should understand that participation in a social media trend does not remove responsibility for what they create, post, or share. This trend, similar online trends, and ANY threat made toward our schools, students, or staff will be taken seriously and investigated to the fullest extent. Criminal charges can/will be pursued.

Parents and guardians, please speak with your children about the consequences associated with creating or sharing threatening content online.

If you see something concerning, report it. Do not help spread it.

The McBee Police Department stands in solidarity with the Columbia Police Department and the entire Columbia community during this difficult time.

Today, we mourn alongside our brothers and sisters in blue as they grieve the loss of one of their own. The loss of a law enforcement officer is felt far beyond the boundaries of one department—it is felt throughout the entire law enforcement family.

Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with the officer’s family, loved ones, and the men and women of the Columbia Police Department. We stand with you during this unimaginable loss

OFFICIAL NOTICE

The Town of McBee announces that the Town Council Seats of James Linton and Charlie Sutton will be open in the upcoming Municipal Election scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

Citizens interested in offering for public service are encouraged to file a Nonpartisan Statement of Intention of Candidacy Form (NPSIC).

- Council Filing Fee: $25.00 (two seats available for election in 2026).
**Cash or Check Only.

The filing period for NPSIC forms will begin Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 1:00PM, and will close Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 5:00PM.

NPSIC forms may be filed at McBee Town Hall during regular office hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

To ensure accessibility for all citizens, Town Hall will also be open on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 9:00AM to 12:00 Noon.

The McBee Police Department remains committed to keeping our roads safe through proactive DUI enforcement.

During DUI enforcement efforts on the night of July 28, 2026, McBee Police officers conducted a traffic stop on a female driver after observing erratic driving behavior. During the investigation, officers developed probable cause to believe the driver was operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

The driver was transported to the Chesterfield County Detention Center, where testing indicated a blood alcohol concentration of more than twice the legal limit.

Driving under the influence puts everyone on the road at risk. The McBee Police Department and its officers will continue to aggressively enforce South Carolina's DUI laws and remain dedicated to serving and protecting the members of our community. We encourage everyone to make responsible choices and never drive impaired.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

McBee Police Department

On July 31, 2026, officers with the McBee Police Department, while conducting proactive anti-narcotics enforcement operations, intercepted a vehicle within the Town of McBee. During the investigation, officers developed probable cause to search the vehicle. The search resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of illegal prescription medications and street narcotics.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was arrested and charged with the following offenses:

* Trafficking Methamphetamine
* Distribution of a Schedule II Controlled Substance (Oxycodone)
* Distribution of a Schedule II Controlled Substance (Amphetamine)
* Possession of a Handgun by a Person Convicted of a Felony
* Possession of a Handgun During the Commission of a Violent Crime
* Possession of Ma*****na

McBee Police Sgt. Lewis stated, “The officers of the McBee Police Department remain committed to protecting our community through proactive enforcement efforts aimed at reducing the presence of illegal drugs and violent crime. We will continue to pursue those who choose to traffic narcotics in our town and work tirelessly to keep McBee a safe place to live, work, and raise a family.”

The McBee Police Department encourages anyone with information regarding illegal drug activity or other criminal activity within the community to contact the department. Information from the public plays a vital role in helping law enforcement keep our neighborhoods safe.

🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

The McBee Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam currently targeting citizens in our area.

A Chesterfield County resident recently received a phone call from someone impersonating a McBee Police Department officer. The caller falsely claimed the individual had missed jury duty and would be arrested unless they immediately paid a fine.

Chief Timothy Knight wants to remind everyone that the Town of McBee Police Department does NOT handle jury duty matters, and our officers will NEVER call you to demand payment or threaten you with arrest over the phone.

If you receive a call like this:
• Hang up immediately.
• Do not provide any personal or financial information.
• Do not send money or purchase gift cards.
• If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, contact the McBee Police Department directly using an official phone number.

Please help protect your family, friends, and neighbors by sharing this post. Staying informed is one of the best ways to prevent becoming the victim of a scam.

Town of McBee wants everyone to know that Jackson The Bookman Burgdorf will be going around McBee for the rest of the summer!

Jackson is going door-to-door showing resources that help with academics, character, and leadership! He checked in with us and gave us the run down and its safe to say this stuff is legit!

Jackson is about 6'4 and is driving a slightly beat up red Mazda CX-9 with a TN license plate 655BBFS. He's super excited to get connected with the community, if you see him please be sure to give him an awesome McBee welcome and make him feel safe! Stay safe and hydrated Jackson, welcome to McBee!
