Only three days until the summer solstice — the longest day of the year. After that, we slowly start losing daylight as we head toward winter ❄️ Just 115 days until Harrisonburg’s earliest snowfall on record (October 10, 1979).

We almost set ourselves up for some much needed rainfall this week as an area of low pressure (perhaps becoming a tropical depression or low end tropical storm tomorrow) drifts across the Gulf. Unfortunately, it’ll stay a bit too far south so our rain chances will only be associated with a sagging front late week and it doesn’t look like much. We are very quickly drying out again and I’d expect some drought deterioration on the next drought monitor update issued Thursday.

The cold front is pressing across Virginia now which will lead to a very nice next couple days with cooler temperatures and lower humidity.

We’ll start to see heat and humidity increase again on Wednesday and Thursday will bring our next chance for showers and thunderstorms as another cold front works through. Some of these could once again be strong to severe.

Today is shaping up to be a nice one as some drier air filters in behind the cold front.

There’s an even stronger cold front dipping into the Midwest which will bring another chance for scattered showers and storms on Sunday followed by even drier, cooler conditions for early next week. Monday and Tuesday look perfect for mid June with highs in the 70s and 80s and low humidity.

Just one week until the summer solstice, the longest day of the summer.

Man, it’s brutal out. Heat index values 100+ are common east of the Blue Ridge and generally still well into the 90s west of there. A cold front will move through this evening bringing more comfortable dew points for Saturday.

It ended up a pretty active severe day across the northern Shenandoah Valley and NOVA where there were various strong wind reports under a number of severe warned storms. Looks like we'll have another chance tomorrow further south.

Today and tomorrow are going to be very hot and humid with daily chances for pop-up showers and thunderstorms. Latest satellite/radar imagery shows two distinct areas of activity associated with upper-level disturbances, one currently over Indiana and another trailing over Iowa. We could see a few scattered showers and storms today as the first one moves through but Friday probably offers the better chance as the trailing shortwave provides a bit more forcing.

There will be an opportunity for some storms either day to become strong to severe with gusty winds and small to medium sized hail the primary threats along with brief heavy rains and frequent lightning.

This week’s drought monitor is once again improved but unfortunately most of us have now gone a week without any meaningful rain and we’ll likely start heading in the opposite direction. There’s a chance for a few showers Sunday as a front sags through but not looking like much.

There’s a slight chance for some naked-eye aurora (northern lights)sightings at our latitude tonight as strong (G3) geomagnetic storms with isolated periods of severe (G4) activity arrive.

Probably worth a peak north after sunset. Skies will be mostly clear so we have that going for us.

Pretty interesting visible satellite this evening showing a surface low spinning off the Outer Banks. This low is non-tropical in nature and set to slowly pull away tomorrow but a good reminder that hurricane season officially began on June 1st.

Feels like we're a bit overdue in terms of an impactful tropical system here in Virginia. One may be needed to finally rid the ongoing drought.
