NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) has named Matthew McClanahan as the department's general counsel, effective Aug. 3, 2026.

McClanahan brings extensive experience in agricultural law, regulatory compliance, administrative law and litigation management. As general counsel, he will provide legal counsel to the department, support agency leadership, oversee legal matters and help ensure the department fulfills its mission of serving, supporting, and promoting agriculture and forestry.

These corn and soybean seedlings emerging through cover crop residue show just how important soil cover is during a drought one month and heavy rains the next!

Standing cover acts like a million tiny umbrellas breaking the impact of heavy rain while the deep, living roots punch channels into the dirt, acting like a sponge to soak up water instead of letting it run off.

Crimped cover crops turn into a heavy, built-in armor that creates a natural mulch layer locking in moisture, blocking out weeds, and keeping the soil cool in the summer heat.

Whether a cover crop is standing tall or crimped down into a thick mat, they are shielding our soil and conserving our water.
