Long but pls read concerning tom 04/19/19 (weather, school closing) pls share, pls share.

As most of you all know by now the Telfair county schools will be closed tomorrow. This is due to forcasted severe weather. The safety of our children along with the adults is always a major concern for the school board, administrators, staff, and myself (ema). So with timming of this projected storm put our children at a risk with being too close to school starting time. Dont think the descions are easy to make because they are not.(Len Harrelson, board, staff) We (telfair school system ,ema) would have loved to have the kids make it to school safely and have them in a place we know that is secure. However the risk and timming of busses and commuters on the road at this time was too great. So as the ema director i now ask to pls stay weather aware tomorrow have your plan ready have a safe place to go for you and your KIDS... again safety of our kids is major concern. I plead with you to keep your kids safe. Have them secure. Last i hope this all for nothing and tomorrow is not severe. Thank you for reading and pls share... Lee Conner T.C.EMA Director.

Update for sunday. Stay weather aware!
03/03/2019

Update for sunday. Stay weather aware!

Changes From the Last Update:

* The Storm Prediction center has expanded the Enhanced Risk across nearly all of central Georgia, and also expanded the Slight Risk across more of north Georgia.
* Confidence is increasing on a more widespread threat of severe weather, including isolated to scattered tornadoes (some could be significant) and damaging wind gusts.

What to expect:

* Scattered storms ahead of and along a cold front - mainly this afternoon into early evening. While a more organized line of storms is expected closer to the front, some more discrete single severe storms could develop ahead of the line and still have potential for tornadoes.
* Tornadoes will be most likely in the Enhanced Risk and Slight Risk areas. While most should be brief/weak, a few stronger more significant tornadoes could occur.
* Given all the recent rainfall, downed trees and powerlines are more likely with wind gusts, along with increased chance of flash flooding and river flooding.

Sumter County Emergency Management

The threat of severe weather, including isolated to scattered tornadoes and damaging wind gusts, is increasing for most of Central Georgia and portions of North Georgia.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has at least a Marginal Risk (risk level 1 out of 5) for most of the forecast area and has also expanded the Slight Risk (risk level 2 out of 5) area to include all of Central Georgia, the Atlanta metro area, as well as areas around Athens.
SPC has also included an area of Enhanced Risk (risk level 3 out of 5) for areas around Columbus, Americus, to near the Warner Robins/Macon area. In the Enhanced Risk area, isolated stronger tornadoes may be possible.
What to expect:
Scattered showers will be likely across the area Sunday morning followed by a line of showers and thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and evening. This line of showers and thunderstorms will have the potential to bring damaging wind gusts, isolated to scattered tornadoes, and periods of heavy rain to the area.

Given the recent above average rainfall in the area, the chances of downed trees and powerlines are more likely and the possibility of seeing some creeks/rivers rise to bankfull or flood levels is increased (especially for those with an active history of doing so over the last several months).

Tornadoes will be most likely in the Slight Risk and Enhanced Risk areas. Of any tornadoes that do occur, most are expected to be brief and weak, however, the chances of a couple of stronger tornadoes will be possible. The probability of stronger tornadoes will be higher in the area of Enhanced Risk, which currently includes the areas around Columbus, Americus, and near Warner Robins/Macon.

Timing of Severe Threat:
Northwest Georgia: 11 AM - 3 PM
I-85 Corridor (including LaGrange, Atlanta, Gainsville, and Athens): 2-6 PM
Central & East-Central Georgia (including Columbus, Macon, Americus, & Dublin): 5-11 PM, although some models are hinting that the line of storms may stall in Central Georgia, extending the threat of severe storms further into the night.

10/08/2018

Just finished up the 1800 (6:00pm) NWS Tallahassee weather briefing for Hurricane Michael, Michael is still a Cat 1 Hurricane, going to rapidly develop into a Major Hurricane Cat 2 over night and possibly into a Cat 3 before making landfall. We should start seeing Tropical Storm Force Winds as Early as Wednesday. All the counties to our south are in a Tropical Storm Warning now. Rain amounts still 5-7 inches expected.
Even thou we are not in a watch or warning area currently does not mean we wont see the effects of this storm.
Be prepared for Heavy Winds bringing down trees and powerlines, causing power outages and Heavy Rains at time causing Flash Flooding.
Have extra food and water for a day or so extra, medication for the next couple of days and oxygen if you are in need of it for a cpl of days. Prepare early not at the last minute.
Again as with All storms there is still some uncertainty until it gets closer and makes landfall, but all models are keeping it heading our way.
We will continue to watch updates from the NWS and post updates as they come in.

There is a strong strong chance telfair county will see winter precipitation tom. Starting in the 4 to 5 am time frame continuing until mid morning. We could expect to see atleast 1 inch of accumulation up to 2 inches in spots. The problem is not snow itself but the factors such as black ice or slick roads. Pls stay safe. Be cautious. And stay inside if you dont have to be out.

12/10/2017

TELFAIR COUNTY EMA is actively monitoring and is aware of a power outage in Telfair County. This outage is due to a tree falling. AT THIS TIME 10:30 PM 12/9/17 power officials have said power will be back on within the hour. This is a concern due to extreme low temps tonight in our area. So please hold tight it will be on shortly. Tips until then would be go to family's or freinds house not affected. Put on several layers of clothing along with blankets. Use a fire place or gas heat(using manufacture specs) for inside heating. Mainly stay warm any way possible. At this time no shelters will be put in place because of time frame of power being restored. Lee Conner ema director
