As you begin to think about the upcoming May elections, it is important for you to learn as much as possible about each candidate - their background and qualifications, and their motivations for running. Here are mine.
Who I am
I am a biochemist, tutor, community volunteer, runner, and advocate for rare disease research and awareness. More importantly, I am a wife, a mom of two Burke-Memorial students, and a proud Medway resident of 15 years. I am passionate about raising my children in a world that is inclusive, honest, open-minded, and thoughtful, and trust that I share this sentiment with most, if not all, of my fellow parents in town. I believe there are fundamental ways we can ensure this type of environment for our children, which is why I’m running for a seat on the Medway School Committee.
Why I’m running
Simply put, I want all of Medway’s students to have a learning environment that is focused on what is best for them and is attentive to their needs, free from political agendas. This means communicating with parents to understand what may work well for their child and what aspects can be improved upon.
Our kids have been through a lot in the past two years. Now, more than ever, the school committee needs members who are dedicated to ensuring that Medway students have the best possible environment to learn, grow, and thrive. Our teachers and staff have given tirelessly of themselves to support their students through these challenging times. They, in turn, need the school committee’s continued support to do what they do best: reach every one of our children where they are, supporting their academic, social, and emotional growth. For this to happen, we must be willing to listen and learn, then do what is needed to meet the challenges head-on.
It is time to rebuild a sense of connection, safety, and peace of mind in our students so we can help facilitate a sustainable learning environment. I believe I’m the candidate that will help make that happen.
What I’ll bring to the role, if elected
In my career as a scientist and director of research, I have learned how to think critically and evaluate evidence, how to work through challenges, and how to approach any problem with creativity, a collaborative spirit, and determination to get the job done.
In my work tutoring students across a wide range of ages, I have learned the importance of recognizing each child’s learning style and finding their comfort zone. Not all kids learn the same way, and we should continue to support all types of learners at all stages. For this to be most effective, our teachers need support from the community and particularly from their school committee.
In my role as a working mom to a second and fourth grader (and a friend and neighbor to many other families with school-aged children), I am reminded every day of the unique and sometimes trying circumstances students and their parents go through. I am also keenly aware that the impact is different for a middle or high school student than for my two kids, and that these issues, while different, are equally important.
If elected to the school committee, I would bring not only the knowledge and skills I’ve gained through these roles, but an unwavering commitment to prioritizing students’ needs, as well as the passion, energy, and work ethic to get the job done.
What I’m asking of you
First and foremost, I’m asking you to vote in the town election on May 17. Historically, the number of Medway voters participating in town elections has been far lower than the number of citizens impacted by the decisions our town boards make. Second, I humbly ask for your vote to elect me to the school committee. I promise if elected to listen thoughtfully and to make decisions based on evidence and in the best interests of our students.
