There are few things in this state more exciting and more unifying than Marathon Monday, a day when thousands of runners lay it all on the line for 26.2 miles across 8 towns after months of intense training. You can feel the energy in the air. It’s the best! I, myself, have crossed that finish line several times, something I'm very proud of. And each time has been more amazing than the last.

Each time I have run the Boston Marathon, I have done so on behalf of a charitable organization. Since 2005 (my first marathon), I have personally raised over $50,000 for Children’s Hospital Boston and National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD), two charities I am very passionate about supporting.

I have also been fortunate enough to run with family members. In 2010, I helped my father train for and complete his first Boston Marathon, something we did together on his 57th birthday. In 2013, my husband, Andrew, my sister, and I ran the race together when I was 14 weeks pregnant with my daughter, a blessing that slowed our pace just enough to keep us safe that year. We were stopped 4 hours in, at mile 25.7, due to the terrifying circumstances that occurred that day. The following year, we all returned to finish what we started, this time with my two brothers and dad with us. And finish we did – Boston Strong.

So why mention this in a post about my campaign for Medway School Committee? Because to train for and run a marathon takes commitment, perseverance, dedication, and focus. It takes not only physical strength, but mental and emotional strength, as well. These traits are what make me a strong candidate for the position of school committee member, and what I can assure you I will bring to the role. Medway is an amazing place to raise a family, and our students (and their parents) deserve a school committee who understands the challenges they face right now and who will work tirelessly to advocate for them, day in and day out.

Because as any parent knows, raising kids in a safe, happy, and inclusive environment is a marathon, not a sprint.

Hello friends! I'm excited to share a little bit about myself with you all as we gear up for our 2022 town election. This campaign has been such an enjoyable process so far. I have met so many new people in town and have had some really great conversations I would otherwise not have. And for that I am so grateful! One question I have been asked by people who are just meeting me is what qualifications I have that would make me a suitable candidate for school committee. That's a great question! Why vote for me? What would I bring to the role?
Well, one reason is my unending ability to apply critical, careful thought to each challenge I am faced with. And to help highlight this point, I've included a couple of photos of me in the lab with my buddy, Myles. I had the chance to show Myles around my lab a while back, and share with him my love of research and the importance of bringing a clear mind and analytical approach to all problems, big or small. And I would do the same if elected to Medway SC.

As you begin to think about the upcoming May elections, it is important for you to learn as much as possible about each candidate - their background and qualifications, and their motivations for running. Here are mine.

Who I am

I am a biochemist, tutor, community volunteer, runner, and advocate for rare disease research and awareness. More importantly, I am a wife, a mom of two Burke-Memorial students, and a proud Medway resident of 15 years. I am passionate about raising my children in a world that is inclusive, honest, open-minded, and thoughtful, and trust that I share this sentiment with most, if not all, of my fellow parents in town. I believe there are fundamental ways we can ensure this type of environment for our children, which is why I’m running for a seat on the Medway School Committee.

Why I’m running

Simply put, I want all of Medway’s students to have a learning environment that is focused on what is best for them and is attentive to their needs, free from political agendas. This means communicating with parents to understand what may work well for their child and what aspects can be improved upon.
Our kids have been through a lot in the past two years. Now, more than ever, the school committee needs members who are dedicated to ensuring that Medway students have the best possible environment to learn, grow, and thrive. Our teachers and staff have given tirelessly of themselves to support their students through these challenging times. They, in turn, need the school committee’s continued support to do what they do best: reach every one of our children where they are, supporting their academic, social, and emotional growth. For this to happen, we must be willing to listen and learn, then do what is needed to meet the challenges head-on.
It is time to rebuild a sense of connection, safety, and peace of mind in our students so we can help facilitate a sustainable learning environment. I believe I’m the candidate that will help make that happen.

What I’ll bring to the role, if elected

In my career as a scientist and director of research, I have learned how to think critically and evaluate evidence, how to work through challenges, and how to approach any problem with creativity, a collaborative spirit, and determination to get the job done.
In my work tutoring students across a wide range of ages, I have learned the importance of recognizing each child’s learning style and finding their comfort zone. Not all kids learn the same way, and we should continue to support all types of learners at all stages. For this to be most effective, our teachers need support from the community and particularly from their school committee.
In my role as a working mom to a second and fourth grader (and a friend and neighbor to many other families with school-aged children), I am reminded every day of the unique and sometimes trying circumstances students and their parents go through. I am also keenly aware that the impact is different for a middle or high school student than for my two kids, and that these issues, while different, are equally important.
If elected to the school committee, I would bring not only the knowledge and skills I’ve gained through these roles, but an unwavering commitment to prioritizing students’ needs, as well as the passion, energy, and work ethic to get the job done.

What I’m asking of you

First and foremost, I’m asking you to vote in the town election on May 17. Historically, the number of Medway voters participating in town elections has been far lower than the number of citizens impacted by the decisions our town boards make. Second, I humbly ask for your vote to elect me to the school committee. I promise if elected to listen thoughtfully and to make decisions based on evidence and in the best interests of our students.
