“These bills unlawfully target Shelby County and its voters,” Mulroy said in a statement. “Our constitution and decades of state Supreme Court precedent make clear that a locally elected district attorney has wide discretion in how to handle cases, free from interference.”

Mulroy added that the laws will make Shelby County residents “less safe” and called them “vague, duplicative and administratively burdensome” because they suggest that federal task force cases should receive priority over those brought by local law enforcement.

The East Memphis Democratic Club were honored to join DNC Chair Ken Martin, along with other local Democratic leaders, to discuss the importance of Memphis and Tennessee for this election cycle and beyond.

With the growing population in Tennessee and other southern states, the pathway to the Presidency and Congressional majority will run through the South. It’s important that the DNC invest in campaign, fundraising, and outreach infrastructure so we can be prepared to reach out to voters, educate them on policy and governance, and drive them to the polls!

The one thing we all agree on: What will define this next election is who gets into the fight, and who sits on the sidelines.
