Good morning from Springfield! It's the final day of Veto Session.
Yesterday, the House debated and passed an energy bill that’s expected to drive up electricity costs for Illinois families. My biggest concern is how much authority it gives to the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) with no caps on rates and no real consumer protections in place. When rates go up (and they most likely will), there’ll be very little we can do to course correct.
Today, we're expecting to take up a proposed $1.9 billion Chicago transit bailout funded through sales tax hikes across the RTA region (impacting our suburban communities) and even new taxes on streaming services.
The theme of this week has been clear: take, take, take. More taxes, higher rates, and fewer protections for the people who keep this state running.
Session kicks off at 11 AM. I’ll keep you posted as we close out the week.
