Wishing all the hunters safe travels and safe hunting!
If you'll be operating an ATV or UTV... please be careful... Happy hunting!

Hunters: Ride safely when using ATVs and UTVs while hunting this year.

So far 41 people have died in ATV and UTV-related crashes this year. Most incidents involved people not wearing a helmet or seat belt. There were 38 fatal crashes in 2020.

Hunters using ATVs or UTVs to retrieve harvests or travel off-road to hunting locations should take life-saving precautions such as wearing a helmet and buckling up. Most hunting incidents involving ATVs or UTVs often occur on private lands and are linked by common factors.

ATV riders at least 12 years old and born after Jan. 1, 1988 must complete a course before operating an ATV on public trails and areas in Wisconsin. UTV operators must be at least age 16.

Tips for a safe ride:
-Don’t drink and ride.
-Slow down.
-Traverse hills with caution.
-Display registration ID number on a rear plate for all ATVs and UTVs registered for public use.
Always wear a Department of Transportation (DOT)-approved helmet.
-Long guns and bows/crossbows must be fully unloaded before transporting them in or on an ATV or UTV.

Stuck in the snow? A running vehicle will keep you safe & warm, but if the exhaust pipe becomes blocked it can lead to a deadly buildup of carbon monoxide.
Don't forget to pack an emergency kit!

If your car gets stuck in the snow, call for help, describe your location, and stay with your vehicle if it’s safe to do so. Find more tips at https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/education/winter-drv/stranded.aspx #ReadyWI #WinterAwarenessWeek

Today’s throwback follows the Winter Awareness Week theme… a major incident on Highway 41/45 in December of 2013 when a snow squall caused white-out conditions. At least 200 vehicles were involved, with over 100 vehicles towed, 54 injuries, 25 people transported by ambulance and sadly 2 fatalities. MFFD units were on-scene for 5 hours along with the MFPD and multiple SE Wisconsin fire agencies and towing companies. These are photos from that day. Please remember to adjust you driving to match the weather and road conditions!

Did you know WCC can receive text-to-911 calls?

Here are some situations when to text 911:

📱 If you are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability.
📱 If you cannot speak due to an illness or medical condition.
📱If you are in a threatening situation where a voice call could escalate the incident.
📱 If you have poor reception, but a text may still go through.

Please remember, if you do text 911, we will still ask you all the same information as if you were calling. You will need to provide your name, location of the emergency, and exactly what is occurring.

Stay warm... but please make sure you do it safely!

Space heaters are a great way to bring a little extra warmth into a home, but make sure you are using them safely! Don’t plug them into extension cords or power strips and keep them away from flammable objects. #ReadyWI #WinterAwarenessWeek
