Col. Justice M. Chambers- Gunny’s Hall Marine Corps League Detachment 555

Col. Justice M. Chambers- Gunny’s Hall Marine Corps League Detachment 555 To preserve the traditions and to promote the interests of the United States Marine Corps League. Lejeune. Roosevelt on August 4, 1937. S. Marine Corps.

The Marine Corps League perpetuates the traditions and spirit of ALL Marines and Navy FMF Corpsmen, who proudly wear or who have worn the eagle, globe and anchor of the Corps. It takes great pride in crediting its founding in 1923 to World War I hero, then Major General Commandant John A. It takes equal pride in its Federal Charter, approved by An Act of the Seventy-Fifth Congress of the United St

ates of America and signed and approved by President Franklin D. The League is the only Federally Chartered Marine Corps related veterans organization in the country. Since its earliest days, the Marine Corps League has enjoyed the support and encouragement of the active duty and Reserve establishments of the U. Today, the League boasts a membership of more than 76,000 men and women, officer and enlisted, active duty, Reserve Marines, honorably discharged Marine Veterans and qualified Navy FMF Corpsmen and is one of the few Veterans Organizations that experiences increases in its membership each year. The Marine Corps League is headed by an elected National Commandant, with 14 elected National Staff Officers who serve as trustees. The National Board of Trustees coordinates the efforts of 49 department, or state, entities and the activities of over 1100 community-based detachments located throughout the United States and overseas. The day-to-day operations of the League are under the control of the National Executive Director with the responsibility for the management and direction of all programs, activities, and affairs of the Marine Corps League as well as supervising the National Headquarters staff. The prime authority of the League is derived from its Congressional charter and from its annual National Convention held each August in different major U.S. cities throughout the nation. It is a not-for-profit organization within the provisions of the Internal Revenue Service Code 501(c) (4), with a special group exemption letter which allows for contributions to the Marine Corps League, its Auxiliary and subsidiary units, to be tax deductible by the donor.

Happy 0311 Day, Leathernecks!

1. This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

2. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.

3. My rifle, without me, is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying

to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will …

4. My rifle and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit….

5. My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage as I will ever guard my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart against damage. I will keep my rifle clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will ….

6. Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.

7. So be it, until victory is America’s and there is no enemy, but peace!!

The Battle of Iwo Jima (February 19, 1945 to March 25, 1945) was one of the most important battles the U.S. fought in the Pacific Campaign during World War II. It was there that the U.S. both captured a central Japanese defense and established a base from which to attack Japan.

At 2 a.m. on Monday, February 19, 1945, the U.S. began its air attack on Iwo Jima. The Japanese were largely able to resist the attack because of their massive system of underground tunnels. At 8:59 a.m., 30,000 U.S. Marines landed on the south beach of Iwo Jima, under the shadow of Mt. Suribachi. At first, they were met with an uncanny silence, but as soon as the beach was full of troops, the Japanese opened fire. However, by evening, the U.S. troops had successfully cut off Mt. Suribachi, a key strategical location, from the rest of the island.

On Friday, February 23, five days after the Battle of Iwo Jima commenced, the U.S. had captured Mt. Suribachi. Five Marines and One Navy Corpsman, using a pipe they found among the rubble atop the mountain, raised a U.S. flag. It was the first time a U.S. flag was flown on Japanese soil. Of the Five Marines and One Navy Corpsman who raised the flag, only three would survive the Battle of Iwo Jima

This image has become one of the most famous in our nations history. "The raising of that flag on Suribachi means a Marine Corps for the next five hundred years. [James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy]"

Marines and Sailors, Attention on Deck! We need you to attend the April Detachment meeting that will be held on Thursday, April 13th at 7pm, located at 8720 Twinbrook Rd, Mentor, OH 44060. We need your voices heard and to hold the entire Officer Staff and Trustees at Gunny’s Hall accountable for what they have done to your detachment. It has been destroyed.

For those of you who are not aware, the officers at Detachment 555 voted to sell the Gunny’s Hall building to Paul Smith for $10.50 back in January 2023 with NO VOTE FROM THE MEMBERS! Paul Smith, who was suspended from the Marine Corps League, set up a new private foundation which now owns the Hall. There was no input or vote held to the detachment members on the sale, they just decided to do it on their own without your input. Well, here is your chance to voice your opinion. Below are some of the high-level points of what has went down:

*The Foundation has been defunct since 2010 as the detachment never followed up on filing paperwork to keep the foundation. This opened an opportunity for Paul Smith to start his own non-profit foundation in which he purchased Gunny’s Hall for $10.50 from a Trustee who sold it to him (without votes from the membership.)

*The Building is worth $198,840. Mr. Paul Smith profited $198,829.50 through the Officers who gave permission to a Trustee to sell the building for less than a case of beer!!!
Paul Smith, who profited $198,829.50 through a Trustee who sold the building for $10.50 is not even a member of the detachment and lives in Toledo, Ohio!!!

What does all this mean? It means that you have no rights to the Gunny’s Hall as members, the doors can be locked at any time because the new foundation does NOT include membership of the Marine Corps League.

*Since the members of the Marine Corps League Detachment 555 have no rights to the hall building located at 8720 Twinbrook Drive, they can lock the doors and forbid you from ever entering the building.
During last month’s detachment meeting, the Trustee who sold the building for $10.50 was asked why he did it. His response was “TO TAKE IT AWAY FROM PEOPLE LIKE YOU!” The Trustee was referring to all of you as members!! Unbelievable. Marines should not do this to each other, we are all brothers.

Marines and Sailors, there is much more to this story to write about, from alleged misconduct and missing money that is unaccounted for. You are encouraged to attend the April 13th Meeting at 7:00 PM (1900 hours). The location is at 8720 Twinbrook Rd, Mentor, OH 44060. Please make your voices heard and hold these officers accountable!

Many of you have just received your first copy of the regular one-sided rant from Paul Smith, a member who is currently under suspension from the League. Others get daily, or at least weekly missives which started when he was suspended from the League. Those of us who have been the subjects of his ramblings have chosen to ignore him in the past, but at some point, he needs to be exposed for what he is. Mr. Smith is a self-proclaimed oracle who proclaims that everything is wrong with the League and its leadership, and that only he can provide our salvation through his profound knowledge and leadership skills. He is constantly advising fellow Ohio Marines that their Department and the National organization is wreaking havoc, but not to worry, because he has their back.

Just today, I returned from a trip to Mentor, Ohio, where I was part of a team following up on some Chapter Nine grievances. At the outset, it seemed that the issue had nothing to do with Mr. Smith. But, oh how that changed. Our investigation provided some interesting revelations. Let me describe….

The Marine Corps League Detachment in Mentor was incorporated in 1996. Four years later, they created a separate incorporated Foundation whose primary purpose was to acquire a building which would house the Detachment and provide facilities for other peripheral activities. The Articles of Incorporation for this Foundation provided that all members of the Detachment were automatically members of the Foundation and the Foundation was for the benefit of the members.

In 2002, the Foundation did acquire a building at a cost of $165,000. Unfortunately, after a few years, the Foundation ceased filing required periodic reports with the Ohio Secretary of State, so the State revoked their Articles of Incorporation in 2010. Detachment members, unaware of the change in status of the Foundation continued to support, maintain and use the facility.

Apparently sensing an opportunity, in January of this year, Mr. Smith incorporated his own “non-profit” foundation, (Gunnys Hall Foundation), with its official address as that of the building where the Detachment is located, which incidentally is 134 miles from Mr. Smith’s home. It’s interesting to note that in his newly created foundation, Detachment members, unlike in the original Foundation, are not automatically included as members; and the directors of this new incorporation are entitled to compensation for their services, and its Board of Directors will decide whether, and to what extent its books, accounts and other records will be open to inspection.

Within days of creating this new entity, Mr. Smith managed to acquire title to the Detachment’s building for the grand total price of $10, which is less that the cost of a hamburger and a beer in the facility. The County Assessor’s website indicates that the market value of the property is $198,840. There are links to these key documents below, and if you look at this Quit Claim Deed, you’ll see that the buyer and new owner is Gunnys Hall Foundation, Paul Smith, Incorporator and the Grantor (seller) is Frank Gron, as Trustee. Until last night’s Detachment meeting, few of the Detachment’s regular members were aware that their building had been given away at this token price.

Under Mr. Smith’s new ownership, it’s entirely possible that the Detachment members could show up at next month’s Detachment meeting and find a padlock on the door, or a For Sale sign in front. That would be quite a windfall for Mr. Smith and there seems to be nothing in the terms of the sale that preclude him from taking these actions.

Mr. Smith is frequently reassuring the Ohio Marines that he has their back. If he has your back and is behind you, you might want to worry about what he has in his hands. If you are wondering about the merits of Mr. Smith’s disgruntled comments, and you want a gauge of his integrity, consider these recent actions.
