Explorer Juan Silva-Reyes recently completed Level IV of the California Highway Patrol Explorer Academy at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento.

The Level IV Academy is a demanding, seven-day live-in program that challenges Explorers both physically and mentally. Participants gain hands-on experience in real-world law enforcement skills such as arrest techniques, teamwork, and leadership—mirroring the expectations placed on future CHP cadets.

Juan has worked hard to reach this level and is currently in the background process to become a CHP cadet. Congratulations, Juan, on this outstanding achievement and continued dedication to serving your community.

Hands-on learning in action. At tonight’s Explorer meeting, our Explorers worked with advisors on arrest and search techniques, skills that are the foundation for a long and successful law enforcement career.

These drills might look simple, but every step is about safety, professionalism, and building confidence for the field.

If you’re ready to challenge yourself, learn real-world skills, and be part of something bigger, the CHP Explorer Program could be your first step toward the badge.

Over the weekend, CHP 460 Explorers represented the Merced Area with pride at the Stockton CHP Explorer Competition. Our team went head-to-head with Explorer Posts from across the state, working through scenarios like DUI investigations, hazmat response, an obstacle course, active shooter response, and more.

We’re proud to share that our Explorers placed third in the hazmat scenario, a challenging test that required teamwork, composure, and critical thinking.

If you or someone you know is interested in law enforcement and looking for an opportunity to train, grow, and serve the community—reach out. Contact your local CHP office and ask about joining the Explorer program. If you’re in the Merced Area, stop by and speak with Officer Zuniga to learn more about becoming a CHP Explorer.

From day one, the 2025 Central Valley Explorer Competition challenged us to think faster, work smarter, and operate better as a team. With over 17 scenario-based events, plus a push-up challenge and more, it was a weekend built to test us—and it delivered.

The competition wrapped up with a formal awards ceremony, and while we didn’t take home any hardware this time, we’re proud of the progress we’ve made and the lessons we’re bringing back.

To all the posts we met this weekend—thank you for raising the bar. And to our supporters back home—thank you for helping us keep pushing forward. The journey is far from over.

Big accomplishment for one of our own!
CHP - Merced Explorer Bryan Duran successfully completed the Level III Explorer Academy at the CHP - Academy in West Sacramento.

Explorer Duran represented the Merced Area with focus and pride. He pushed through every challenge and came out stronger. The entire 460 family is proud of him.
