The dismantling of USAID combined with drastic cuts to the World Health Organization and UNICEF plus domestic cuts to public health, have combined to handicap the containment of Ebola and increase the risk to Americans.
These drastic cuts were made without regard to the consequences. Those consequences are now coming home.
USAID, UNICEF and WHO address the disease at the source, which ultimately is the only way to limit the spread and reduce risk to Americans. Without effective action at the source, it is just a matter of time before Ebola arrives in the US.
Domestically, the public health system acts as an infectious disease detection system. The Trump administration has defunded and cut dozens of these systems, in addition to the cuts to WHO, and eliminated data gathering by CDC, all of which undermine the US ability to detect and respond to infectious diseases.
There needs to be a loud outcry about this. Let your representatives know.
