I’m curious to know how many of our elected officials attend language classes and can speak the language? I have heard our Secretary Treasure (Dennis Scott) give a beautiful prayer in Anishinaabemowin, but no one else. We need more focus on culture. We need our tribal leaders encouraging and pushing to bring our language back. People want to reconnect with their culture and it would bring the tribe together nationwide.

Congratulations to the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma Business Committee for continuing the proud tradition of “selective transparency.”

Nothing says “transparent leadership” quite like tribal members finding out our Chief resigned through random gossip instead of an official announcement.

We were promised openness and accountability. Instead, it’s still information for friends and family first, tribe second.

And please don’t use the excuse that it was “announced at a Business Committee meeting” as proof of transparency when not even 1% of the tribe attends those meetings. Especially when members — including myself — have been excluded from attending in the past by requiring passwords and then ignoring requests to provide them.

And somehow when things go wrong, one person gets blamed — even though the Business Committee has FIVE members.

At this point “transparency” must mean transparent to only certain people.
