☀️🌡️ A heat wave has settled over our area and the soaring temperatures can be dangerous for both humans and animals. All of our animals will have access to cool shaded areas, and some even have AC. 👓

* The Zoo Crew gets very creative with special, favored icy 🧊 creations like fish-cicles for the otters, blood-cicles for the carnivores, and fruit ice pops for the primates and barnyard residents to help beat the heat.

These common marmosets are just the cutest 🐒🐒. "Marmoset" is derived from the French "marmouset," which means, loosely, shrimp or dwarf. An apt name, considering they are the smallest of the true monkeys. These monkeys use their specialized claws (not nails) to grip tree trunks firmly and gnaw small holes in the bark with their lower incisors and canines. This causes the tree to produce more sap, which it uses to seal injuries in the bark. This tree sap is a valuable source of carbohydrates and minerals.

How about some otterly interesting facts you should know about these amazing animals?

The Zoo is home to two River otters - Olive and Mac. The North American river otter hunts for food in both freshwater and saltwater. They dine on fish, crabs, frogs, birds’ eggs, and some reptiles. They are known for their playfulness and can run at speeds up to 15 miles an hour.

True beauty can be elusive, and if you ever find yourself in search of two of the great rare beauties of the Washington Park Zoo, Amari and Zuri do not make it easy for you. It sometimes takes some time to find our African Leopard sisters, who, like their species, are famously elusive and built to camouflage themselves into their surroundings. Amari loves to sit up near the top of the water fountain, and Zuri seems to like the dark back area of the exhibit space.
Fun Fact: Leopards have larger canine teeth in proportion to body size than any other living wild cat, and specialized rotating ankle joints that allow them to go down trees headfirst.
Conservation Fact: Leopards are classified as "vulnerable", meaning they face a high risk of extinction in the wild. Big Cats are threatened by habitat loss, fragmentation, human persecution, and illegal wildlife trade, including trophy hunting.

A reminder that we will be falling back to our off-season hours on Monday, September 7th. The Zoo will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with last admission at 3:00 p.m.

Coop Concessions, Gift Shop, and Observation Tower will be open daily. The last day for the Safari Train will be this Saturday, Sept. 29th. 🍂
