This week, we had the honor to host both state and federal legislators for a tour of the Indiana Dunes State Park to learn more about the unique ecosystems, wildlife, and recreational opportunities state parks provide.

Thank you to our legislators, including Senator Todd Young, State Senator Rodney Pol Jr., and Julie Olthoff State Representative, for joining us, and Indiana Conservation Voters for helping coordinate our site tour of the Indiana Dunes State Park!

Learn more about the natural beauty, wildlife, and recreational opportunities our state park offers here: https://www.in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/indiana-dunes-state-park/

Ready to take your support of the Indiana Dunes to the next level? Save the Dunes members are the heartbeat of our organization, and their generosity has funded decades of projects to preserve the Indiana Dunes, Lake Michigan, and the surrounding natural areas. Your membership will help us continue to protect the dunes and support the National Park now and for future generations.

Membership provides critical funding for our work in land preservation and habitat restoration and to improve public access to the dunes as we connect people and the surrounding communities to Indiana’s most precious natural resources. Membership also supports our advocacy efforts and gives us legal standing in court to defend the Indiana Dunes and Lake Michigan from a variety of threats. Indiana Dunes National Park has waived the entrance fee for the Douglas Center Loop and Paul H. Douglas Trail at Miller Woods, both accessible from the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education in Gary. This change allows visitors to connect the center’s exhibits, programs and ranger-led activities with outdoor learning and exploration without purchasing a park entrance pass. This change will allow for greater access for the community, whether it be school groups, families, or visitors to be able to explore the Indiana Dunes! The parking lot also links to the Marquette Greenway, and other bike paths to Marquette Park. This is an exciting update for our region!

If you haven’t had a chance to visit the Barker House and Homestead, nestled within the 30 acre old growth forest of Barker Woods, you won’t want to miss this exciting event! On Wednesday, October 28th, we’ll host our Barker Seasonal Forum: A Sense Sublime, by welcoming special guest, Glory June Greiff, to perform “A Sense Sublime: Poems & Prose of Nature and Spirituality “

After our walk through the forest, listen to dramatic readings from the English Romantics and the American Transcendentalists, as well as Aldo Leopold, Gene Stratton-Porter, and Robin Wall Kimmerer. Explore with others through small group conversations what these poets and writers have to say about the wonder of nature and connection to the Infinite. Save the Dunes was faced with the difficult decision to cancel Jammin with Save the Dunes on September 19th, but our appreciation for our incredible event sponsors remains. We want to shine another spotlight on them, as their commitment and unwavering support mean so much to our organization. Their early commitment and generous support were instrumental in planning the event, and their partnership remains invaluable to Save the Dunes.
