On August 6, 1962, Trooper Joseph M. Stoba, Jr., was fatally shot during a domestic dispute.

Trooper Stoba was working at Troop K, assigned to transport a prisoner back to the state jail in Haddam. As he and the prisoner drove towards the jail, Trooper Stoba was directed to a domestic dispute at a home in Portland whose male occupant had a history of drunken domestic incidents. Trooper Stoba and the male spoke on the porch of the home and both agreed that the occupant should go with Trooper Stoba to sober up.

Trooper Stoba let the man go back into his house for a sweater, but when the man returned, he was armed with a rifle. Before Trooper Stoba could react, the man fatally shot him.

With great weather expected this weekend, more riders will be out on Connecticut's roads. So far in 2026, we've seen 17 fatal motorcycle collisions statewide, up 112% from this time last year.

Riders: gear up and stay visible.
Drivers: slow down and look twice.

Every ride should end at home.

The crashes come as the state has seen a rise in motorcycle fatalities so far this year.
