Yesterday, I self-reported our district's special education concerns to the Texas Education Agency (TEA), State Board of Education (c/o TEA), our local district, the State Senator for SD-31, and our State House Representative. It's the right thing to do—holding ourselves accountable to Texas's highest education authorities while trusting our local leaders to ensure this never happens again.
Public education, especially special education, is complex and cumbersome. I've highlighted these issues since joining the board in 2022, and while progress continues, my top priority is protecting every child first and foremost.
We may need state guidance on best practices and SOPs for stronger accountability. That said, I have full faith in our superintendent and administration—they truly put all students' best interests at heart. Together, we'll make it right.
I'd like to acknowledge Michael Booker, Josh Guinn, Angel Hernandez, and Dr. Matt Friez for their leadership in putting kids first, even when it's difficult. Remember: Kids before adult convenience.
