What is going on at the Midwest City Council meetings? I have attended a few meetings this year and try to watch them on YouTube to keep informed about city activities. The last meeting on Tuesday, May 28th was the craziest thing I have ever witnessed.

It appears that one council member is very difficult and seems to like a lot of name-calling and disrespectful behavior. I don’t know all of the issues, but it appears to me that she likes conflict.

If you don’t believe me, read the account on the front page of the Midwest City Beacon and then watch the You Tube video of the council meeting.

The link for the council meeting is: https://www.youtube.com/live/6f9VzFtNoKU?si=c8B3fPjZxJw0e-KI

I’m interested in your opinion of the meeting.

I have heard some people complaining that the city is trying to stop the growth of Midwest City with the current moratorium on new homes being developed due to limitations in the city’s sanitation system.

I don’t think that is totally accurate. I have asked some people at the city if this is true and they said that is not the truth.

The city’s lift stations that carry the sewage to the sanitation station is limited in the amount of sewage it can process. If there is too much in the system, it could cause it to back up into people’s homes, so the city is limiting new homes being added to the system until they can upgrade the lift stations.

From what I understand, there are some proposals to upgrade the system, but nothing has been finalized on how that will be done and who will pay for it.

I’m old fashioned, I don’t think you should burden the current taxpayers to pay for upgrades to a system that benefits new home owners before you take care of the people who currently pay taxes and already live in Midwest City. We just passed a bond to make improvements for infrastructure improvements to our city (and we - the current taxpayers) are going to pay for those improvements through our sales taxes and property taxes. Midwest City has some older neighborhoods that need improvements to the sanitation system (replacement of sewage pipes and water pipes). Shouldn’t we take care of that first, before we worry about adding more new homes?

Oh, also, it is my understanding that Jeff Moore (Candidate for Ward 3) thinks the city should pay for extending the existing sewer lines to his properties that he wants to build new homes at the city’s expense (your tax dollars)!!! That doesn’t seem right to me.

If you have questions about what is going on at City Hall, do what I do - ASK. I called my council person and got these answers.

Ward 4 has two candidates in the runoff in April:

Nicholas Timme is making his second attempt for election to public office in Midwest City. He lost in the last election for the Ward 2 Council position. Mr. Timme is a member of the Oklahoma National Guard and recently worked at the Tinker Credit Union. His goal is to be elected as Midwest City Council representative for Ward 4 and ultimately hopes to run for State Representative for our district. He currently serves on several committees in the city and is Vice President of the Country Estates Neighborhood Association.

Marc Thompson has never served in public office, but is President of the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association. Mr. Thompson was a vocal opponent of the new apartment complex being built in Ridgecrest. He felt the city shouldn’t have re-zoned an area that was single family dwellings to add 200 additional apartments. He and his group were successful in getting the number of apartments reduced. He wants to be a voice for the people in his ward and certainly has the background and knowledge of how to get things done. I believe he will be responsive and work to effect changes needed for his community.

Let’s talk about the candidates!

Ward 3 has two candidates in the runoff:

Rita Maxwell - I’m really impressed with her as a candidate, she has been involved in community affairs for a long time and appears to really care about the citizens. She has not run for political office in Midwest City before (maybe that is a good thing) - we could use some new people involved in our city government. We are in a growth stage and need forward-looking people that don’t have a personal opportunity to gain financially. She isn’t a developer, she isn’t looking to fill her pocket at the tax-payer’s expense. She is a military veteran and business owner. I think she will be looking for ways to help our local businesses as well as look out for our local citizens. I endorse Rita Maxwell.

Jeff Moore - he previously served as Ward 6 Councilman and only recently changed his voter registration to Ward 3 (before he registered to run for the Ward 3 election). It’s strange how he has lived at his current address for years (even while he was the Ward 6 Councilman). He recently made the news about some property he owns that the county was considering buying for the new jail. That location would have put the jail adjacent to Tinker AFB, near a hospital, schools and our new sports complex. He did this without thinking (or maybe he was) of the impact to our community. I believe he was only thinking about profit. Jeff Moore is a developer and there have been times in the past when he used his position as Ward 6 Councilman to benefit himself.

Who do you think will be the better candidate??????

I agree with this. We need to give different people the chance to run for office. We need new ideas to grow our city.

Why is it so important to vote for the best city council candidate?

Cities have different ways of managing the day to day operations of their communities. Some have a strong Mayor, while others have a strong City Manager run city. Midwest City is the latter. Our City Manager and his staff are responsible for the public safety, streets, parks, water, sanitation and overall management of everything physical in the city. Federal and State laws affect us every day, but we are most directly impacted by the ordinances that direct how we keep our city strong and healthy. In the last few years, there has been a concerted effort to review, revise and improve those ordinances and there are provisions to have those ordinances waived, when needed. Here is an example of why we need ordinances to regulate our city: my neighbor wants to install an eight foot tall metal fence around his entire lot - the ordinances stipulate the size, materials that may be used and limitations of where the fence can be installed. Midwest City doesn’t allow eight foot metal fences around residential property and the fence can only be installed around the back yard and has limitations on how far it can be installed to the front of the home. Some homes in Midwest City has some lower fencing in the front yards (but even it has to conform to ordinances on the height due to safety concerns (firemen have to be able to get to the house). Some people don’t like the limitations and feel they should be able to install what they want (after all, it is their property).

What do you think? Should everyone be able to do whatever they want or should we as a community have some conformance to ordinances that make our city look better and is inviting to new businesses? That is one of the things the MWC Council and Mayor are responsible for - reviewing and voting on changes to ordinances.

Sometimes, candidates run on a platform that want to do away with limitations or restrictions because it serves their needs - not the needs of the community.

We had low voter turnout at the last Midwest City Coucil elections. These positions on the council are very important - the members work for you. It is their job to review changes recommended by the city and then decide on money spent on those recommendations. If we elect the wrong people, our tax dollars might not be spent how we want. We really need to vote or we could have council members who don’t listen to us.

The runoff election for Wards 3 and 4 are on April 2nd. The last day to register to vote is March 8th.

Please feel free to post about the candidates or if you have questions.

I’ll be posting about each of the candidates with links to their political pages so you can be informed about the issues before you vote.

This page is established to give the citizens of Midwest City the opportunity to share how they feel about the changes in Midwest City. Let’s talk about what we want to change and the things we don’t like.

Let’s let our leaders know (respectfully) what they can do to meet our needs. Feel free to talk about issues (MWC related only).

No foul language will be allowed. Please be respectful with no name-calling or abusive language.
