I have a lot of time on my hands since going into COVID isolation. Mild symptoms, (fully vaccinated) but past the 6 month period so a booster would have helped, but just the same, feeling rather unproductive. I am going to try to put something out every week. By now I was hoping that we would have reached the 68-70% fully vaccinated level. That would have reduced our infection and death rates substantially. In fact, a significant amount of bus drivers calling in sick, teachers and staff requiring quarantining and the disruptions it caused is due to people not getting vaccinated. Normally, MPS transportation plans for a 10% absentee rate but with COVID those numbers run closer to 25-30%. Staff email me almost daily on growing frustrated by lacking staff in their buildings. Parents have similar complaints. I say all of this to state the obvious, the most logical solution to this is to get enough people vaccinated in order to reduce the rate of infections, with the subsequent number of drivers and staff that go down sick or are forced to quarantine. There is no magic solution to this. If we make the sacrifice to vaccinate and wear masks we protect each other enough to bring back an as semblance of order. For me, a board director, I must act on behalf of the children, staff and families that I represent. That is first and foremost. This is not about my rights and freedoms because first I must act on my responsibilities. To my family, my students and staff etc. the more of us that act on that sacrifice the greater chance we have of reducing this and getting back to normal order. I am humbly pleading with those of you who have not gotten vaccinated to help us with this-please. Sincerely, Director Leonard
Just a quick FYI. The 7th district townhall hearing will be held tomorrow from 5:30-7:00 pm at Walt Whitman School (4200 south 54th street). This townhall gives the 7th district parents/families/staff and community members the opportunity to hear the MPS administrative ideas for spending ESSER III dollars but is also an opportunity to get direct input from the aforementioned groups on how they would like these funds spent. Your input is greatly appreciated and may have a direct input on how board directors vote on spending plans. If we are inside be aware that masks must be worn as this is both MPS policy and one of our mitigation methods in reducing the spread of Covid.
Thank You
Director Leonard 7th district.
Good Evening Everyone,
I have not posted on this site in a few months. But I wanted to let constituents and other supporters know that MPS and myself thought best to postpone my town hall set up for Hamilton HS due to high temperatures and dew points MPS closed early. I am planning on doing an in-person town hall next week and it will be posted to the MPS site, this site and some of the community organization sites. I will keep you posted and if you need babysitting in order to attend the meeting it will be made available. In the next week I will post details of the agenda and other comments as a prep to the town hall.
Thank You
Good Morning Everyone,

I am putting my email address out on this post because I am sincerely working on developing better communications between the board, myself and you the constituents. We may not always agree but your input is valuable and will help in finding the common ground to improve our school district. Again, thank you. [email protected]

ENDORSEMENT:
I wholeheartedly support Henry Leonard to represent Milwaukee Public School Board District #7.
Henry Leonard taught science, special education, and coached in Milwaukee Public Schools for 27 years. He ran a leadership camp for students-of-color for 17 years. He worked to recruit Paras and parents to enter the teaching profession for MPS. He has worked on district councils, taught Citizenship classes to immigrant parents, organized legal aid and assistance for Muslim and Burmese families.
Henry truly knows the importance of education. He is an example of building strong relationships between schools and parents and their children. His home visits were a monthly event.
Henry Leonard truly believes in public schools. He worked actively against attempts at the takeover of MPS, and also, in promoting to get the MPS Referendum passed.
He is passionate, experience, and an uncompromising advocate for our children and their families. Please give him your support.
A thank you and shoutout to everyone that came out in this past week to gather signatures to get my name on the ballot. We are well over the halfway point to reaching 550 signatures. ENDORSEMENT
Mr. Henry Leonard possesses the skills and personality I believe is needed to be an effective School Board Member for an Urban School System. There is a need for an individual who is an independent thinker who also has experience in working with students, parents, and the community. His teaching career demonstrates his first-hand experience regarding the needs of schools, teachers, students, and parents in MPS.
His educational credentials include regular education certification, special education certification, and a master's in school administration. Through the career path he has chosen, Henry Leonard has clearly witnessed education from multiple viewpoints. His work with adjudicated youth, our adult immigrant population (preparing for citizenship), and community organizations including the social justice movement highlight his community advocacy.
As a staff member, he was chosen by colleagues and parents to work on Learning teams and school-based committees, due to his evident leadership abilities.
His forward thinking will help to lead MPS to be an institution that values various cultures. He will help to create a system that supports education by supporting staff, students, and the community.
He is the person who will show his integrity by ensuring fair and equal treatment for all stakeholders. Henry Leonard is a dedicated family man, an educator, community advocate, and an MPS student and family supporter.
I trust his calm, careful, and rational decision-making skills and believe he is an excellent candidate for the MPS school board.

Good Morning Everyone,
Congratulations to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. I am both relieved and ecstatic about their victory. I averaged 15-25 hours per week working on the campaign which included extensive efforts with a strong team of educators to get out the mail-in votes, and other GOTV actions to make this happen. I could not think of anything else for the past 2 weeks. When it was announced on Saturday I felt an immense relief which turned into cries of joy, hugging of neighbors and celebrations. I have come back down to earth and am ready to start on my own campaign. With that said, within this week this site should have more to offer everyone on why and what I am running on for the 7th district Milwaukee school board seat. At this point in any political campaign every candidate needs to garner enough funds to actually run a campaign. I am no different. For those that know me I am calling on your support to both donate to my campaign and get the word out to others that I am running and need any type of support they are willing to give. On this site the easiest and fastest way to donate is through the ActBlue account but if you prefer to send me a check make it out to henry for MPS. My address is 6419 West Stack Court Milwaukee, Wi., 53219. I thank you in advance. If you want to offer any help with the campaign please reply to me on messenger, [email protected] or call 414-550-2144. If I don't answer please leave a message. I will get back to you within the day. Again, thank you.
Of all the possible issues that school board directors, teachers, parents etc. will have dialogue on the Covid-19 effect on our children's education would be front and center. I have been researching the virus since March on every possible site I can. Having taught science for most of my teaching career, the data and facts must always be a precursor to any reopening topics. I have been in a 2 day long discussion on a Evers/Covid site that involves a wide array of people from around the state. We are sharing data, both quantitative as well, as anecdotal, comparisons of models and their effects on families, and every topic in-between. It has been enlightening and hopefully instrumental for any type of reopening plans. I bring this up to post that if I should get elected I believe that it is my responsibility to take this challenge on responsibly, fairly, and intelligently. SAFETY must be paramount to any planning. That has taken place in MPS but this is a fluid condition. If anyone wants to join into the discussion contact me to get the site information. Thank You
Good Afternoon Everyone,
First off, for everyone that has already started donating to my campaign for school board, a big thank you. The encouragement and support is greatly appreciated and honestly, is very motivating. For those that don't know me as well, I will be sending out more information as we get nearer to the end of this crazy but extremely important election. ( I am currently working on the general and state elections) My main focus is on saving our democracy and and bringing in much more effective leaders. We as a nation, stand at a critical crossroads. One that determines if we develop as nation for all of us or one that becomes divided to the point of critical decline. For these reasons my official launch will be after the general election. I would still love to hear from you and will answer all calls, emails and texts. Again, Thank You.
