Sealants in School: Wisconsin Seal-A-Smile safely provides dental care during COVID-19 - Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin

As schools shut down and preventive and non-emergency dental care came to a halt due to COVID-19, unanticipated consequences occurred: children’s oral health declined.

Nikki Frisch, dental hygienist and owner of Seals on Wheels Oral Health Program, wasn't able to provide preventative dental care through Wisconsin Seal-A-Smile from March to October 2020. After taking extra steps to safely provide care again, Nikki and her team saw a 319% increase in early dental needs such as broken fillings and decay and a 147% increase in urgent dental needs such as pain or infection.

Read the story below to learn more about how Nikki is able to safely provide care, and why this care is needed now more than ever.

Wisconsin Emergency Medical Services for Children: Bridging the gaps between schools and emergency medical services - Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin

Emergencies at school are never anticipated, but being prepared to care for the child that is impacted is crucial in ensuring a positive outcome.

Wisconsin EMSC recently launched a pilot with Clayton School District and Clear Lake EMS to connect the two organizations as a way to be better prepared in case of emergencies involving children and youth with special health care needs.

“This program is worth it 1,000%. It’s really an amazing project," said Keri Aquino, an EMT from Clear Lake EMS involved in the project.

Wisconsin MDI: How a dental hygienist can change a medical setting - Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin

Patti DeQuardo has one piece of advice for any clinic thinking about participating in the Wisconsin Medical Dental Integration Project (MDI): just do it.

Participating in MDI is crucial because the project works to change the health care setting by adding a dental hygienist to the team. By doing this, access to preventive dental care will increase and the dental disease burden for young children and pregnant women will decrease.

Read more about DeQuardo's experience as a dental hygienist participating in MDI at Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers and how important this program is to both patients and providers.

First Aid: Dehydration (for Parents) - Nemours KidsHealth

We know that drinking water helps prevent dehydration for both adults and children.

Because it can be difficult to monitor how much fluid your child is consuming, it is important to know the signs of dehydration.

https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/dehydration-sheet.html?WT.ac=p-ra#catbody

Kids can become dehydrated when their bodies lose very large amounts of fluids. It's important to replenish fluid losses as quickly as possible.
