Milwaukee County takes it slow on spending federal pandemic relief as it seeks community input

While the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee Public Schools already know how they're going to spend hundreds of millions of dollars in federal pandemic aid, Milwaukee County is taking things at a slower pace.

Milwaukee County increasing wages, stepping up lifeguard recruitment efforts to keep pools, beaches open next summer

Milwaukee County needs 200 lifeguards to open pools safely. This year, we recruited less than 100. That’s a problem. But the county board is taking action: increasing lifeguard wages and adding $100,000 for Milwaukee County Parks workforce development. Thanks to Taylor Lumpkin TMJ4 News for telling our story.

Eyes on Milwaukee: Officials Celebrate Tent City Replacement

What an incredible accomplishment!:

“Milwaukee County Housing Division administrator James Mathy said ‘Tent City,’ as the homeless encampment became infamously known, was ‘a huge tragedy.’

“At its peak, Mathy said 93 individuals lived in the camp, which was actually a series of sites spread across six acres.

“‘All of those individuals are no longer homeless,’ he announced Tuesday to applause from the dozens of people in attendance at a press conference.” https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2021/09/28/eyes-on-milwaukee-officials-celebrate-tent-city-replacement/

Deeply honored to participate in a wreath laying ceremony in memory of those lost on 9/11. Thankful to join people like the War Memorial Center’s Dan Buttery, County Executive David Crowley, Sheriff Earnell Lucas, Mayor Tom Barrett, Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors John Weishan and others for this moment of unity and respect for law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics, public servants, soldiers, veterans, working people and our country.

On my way to the ceremony, I was listening to a radio interview of a still-grieving 9/11 widow - and I cried so hard that one of my contacts fell out. This is a traumatic and painful day for so many. The loved ones left behind are in my thoughts, today and always.

Last week was a big day for mental health and for collaboration in Milwaukee County. The new Milwaukee County Mental Health Emergency Center had its “beam signing” event - showcasing all the partners who helped bring it to life: Milwaukee County, Advocate Aurora Health, Froedtert Hospital, Children's Wisconsin, Ascension and the state of Wisconsin, thanks to a $5.7 million announcement by Governor Tony Evers.

This new center, located smartly in the neighborhood where 80% of the patients live, will reduce access challenges these folks face, and enable more people to get the help they need. It makes you wonder what else can be accomplished when leaders come together and focus. Kudos to all the groups, and special thanks to Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and everyone in DHHS for driving this change.
