Deeply honored to participate in a wreath laying ceremony in memory of those lost on 9/11. Thankful to join people like the War Memorial Center’s Dan Buttery, County Executive David Crowley, Sheriff Earnell Lucas, Mayor Tom Barrett, Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors John Weishan and others for this moment of unity and respect for law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics, public servants, soldiers, veterans, working people and our country.

On my way to the ceremony, I was listening to a radio interview of a still-grieving 9/11 widow - and I cried so hard that one of my contacts fell out. This is a traumatic and painful day for so many. The loved ones left behind are in my thoughts, today and always.

Last week was a big day for mental health and for collaboration in Milwaukee County. The new Milwaukee County Mental Health Emergency Center had its “beam signing” event - showcasing all the partners who helped bring it to life: Milwaukee County, Advocate Aurora Health, Froedtert Hospital, Children's Wisconsin, Ascension and the state of Wisconsin, thanks to a $5.7 million announcement by Governor Tony Evers.

This new center, located smartly in the neighborhood where 80% of the patients live, will reduce access challenges these folks face, and enable more people to get the help they need. It makes you wonder what else can be accomplished when leaders come together and focus. Kudos to all the groups, and special thanks to Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and everyone in DHHS for driving this change.

MKE County: Supervisors Create Independent Redistricting Committee

Fair maps! I’m proud that Milwaukee County is using an independent redistricting committee to determine our district maps for the next decade. The maps may not serve the best interests of us elected supervisors, but they should serve the best interests of our community. That’s how it should be.

An historic first. But six retired judges must act fast to create new legislative maps.

East Tosa - it looks like our power may be off for a bit. A few quick thoughts:

1) CHECK ON ELDERLY AND DISABLED NEIGHBORS - It may rise to 90 degrees today. With no a/c or power, they may need help.

2) DON’T TOUCH DOWN POWER LINES - This may sound obvious but it happens often.

Hang in there.

A Lot Of People Blame Baby Boomers For The Housing Shortage, But It's Not So Simple

“Housing experts pretty much agree, we cannot get out of this housing crisis without building more housing. And we can't build more housing without changing some of these zoning laws.”

Baby boomers have the biggest share of real estate wealth in the U.S. and aren't selling their homes as they grow old. So some people blame boomers for the housing shortage. But is that really fair?

Despite public support, ma*****na is not legal yet in Wisconsin. Here's how some Milwaukee-area leaders feel about it.

"There are severe disparities in Black ma*****na possession convictions that are driven by counties outside Milwaukee," said Branden DuPont, a data analyst with the Institute for Health and Equity at the Medical College of Wisconsin. “Despite Milwaukee County having more than two-thirds of Wisconsin's Black population, in 2019, 92% of Wisconsin's Black ma*****na possession convictions occur in the rest of the state."

The ACLU report found that in Ozaukee County, Black people are 34.90 times more likely to be arrested for a ma*****na possession charge than a white person. That number is at 27.07 for Washington County and 23.88 for Waukesha County.

In Milwaukee County, the number is lower than the state average; there, Black people are 3.2 times more likely than white people to be arrested for ma*****na possession.

Gov. Tony Evers proposed legalizing recreational ma*****na as part of the most recent state budget. Wisconsin lawmakers say that's a long way off.

MCTS Freeway Flyers to resume commuter service on August 30 as more Downtown offices reopen | The Milwaukee Independent

Freeway Flyers are BACK.

“Even with the growing complications from the Delta variant of COVID-19, businesses are starting to reopen physical offices in the downtown area. With more openings planned in the coming months, we decided it was time to resume its Freeway Flyers to help employees get to and from work,” said MCTS in a statement.

Moving Toward a Shared Vision

“Balancing the last nine county budgets has required a cumulative cut of $280 million. And the cost of state-mandated services continues to grow as shared revenue remains stagnant. Without additional revenue we will have no local funds to invest in local priorities by 2027.

“This is why we continue to advocate at the state level for the ability to generate local revenue to properly invest in the services we all enjoy. An additional .5% sales tax would generate around $80 million annually. This is money that can be spent on the backlog of deferred maintenance in our parks or bringing back the many bus routes we’ve had to cut over the years. Our ability to invest in these priorities enables the entire region to remain competitive.”

-Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson

Marcelia Nicholson was elected in 2016 as County Supervisor for the 5th District, which includes parts of Downtown and the North Side. Last year she became the first Black woman to serve as chairperson of the County Board of Supervisors.

I am asking for the Wauwatosa Common Council to reject an ordinance change that would worsen homelessness and job insecurity. While I agree that panhandling should be discouraged, the answer is not police interactions, tickets, fines, and hardship. We have to do the hard work and address the root causes of panhandling, homelessness and poverty - and we do that by promoting affordable housing, rent relief, job training and more.

Help us create a recovery plan for Milwaukee County | by Shawn Rolland | LinkedIn

I am humbled to share that County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson has selected me to co-chair Milwaukee County’s American Rescue Plan Act Task Force. In the coming months, this task force will solicit input from the community and create a joint recommendation to strategically allocate the $183.6+ million in federal funding that the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors received as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

I’m interested in your thoughts. How should Milwaukee County make investments to drive economic recovery, provide relief to struggling families, invest in housing and infrastructure, and improve its financial situation? Let's dig in.
