It is incumbent on all African American Firefighters to make the Fire Service relevant to the needs, expectations, and aspirations of the citizens we serve. We strive to have a workforce that reflects the city that it serves. By addressing these problems we aim to ;
Partner with the Milwaukee Fire Department to improve fire education and safety intiatives in the areas of greatest need , where our most disadvantaged ,neglected and exploited citzens reside. Reduce the number of fire fatalities ,violent injuries, and infant mortality in our community. Assist the city of Milwaukee with its goal and desire to have a diverse Fire Department. Serve as mentors and role models. Provide recruitment, career siminars , training and guidance. Help build a healthy and safe Milwaukee by following these three principles of Kwanzaa,
1.Umoja - Unity....
2. Ujima - Collective work and responsibility.
3. Ujamaa - Cooperative economics. Our membership is open to individuals of any race, gender or nationality that agree to adhere to our bylaws, and are willing to support our purpose and aims. African proverb ; For tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today !

In #BlackHistoryMonth, Ignite The Spirit- Milwaukee would like to highlight the Milwaukee Brotherhood of Firefighters.

The Milwaukee Brotherhood of Firefighters was established in 1979 as a chapter of the North Central Region of the International Association of the Black Professional Firefighters . Since it’s inception, the organization has worked to address the under-representation of minority groups in the fire and EMS service through activities that support recruitment, education, and engagement to communities of color.

Today, The Milwaukee Brotherhood of Firefighters consists of members in every rank and file of the Milwaukee Fire Department and remains engaged to the organization's long-standing commitment to the City of Milwaukee.

#IgniteTheSpiritMKE is grateful to have amazing firefighters like those involved in The #MBFF working in our communities.

There are many paths to pursuing a career in the fire service and emergency medicine. In recognition of Black History Month, we’d like to highlight Assistant Fire Chief Joshua Parish. At age 39 he was the youngest African American to achieve his rank within the history of the Milwaukee Fire Department.

Assistant Chief Parish is born and raised in Milwaukee. He began his training and education fresh out of high school at the fire academy through the Milwaukee Fire Cadet paid apprenticeship program. After graduating he quickly ascended the ranks of the department from firefighter to company officer and to chief. All the while honing his emergency medical skills as a licensed Paramedic.

Early on, Assistant Chief Parish understood the importance of education both personally and professionally. He currently holds an associate degree from MATC, along with a bachelors in Public Health, a masters in Behavioral Science and Healthcare Management. He is also a proud graduate of the Carl Holmes Executive Development Institute. Being able to apply his teachings to the real time responsibilities he oversees as the assistant chief of EMS, training, education and wellness is truly a passion for him.

During his 20+ year career he has served the community in many capacities outside of the firehouse. They’ve ranged from various nonprofit groups and professional organizations such as the Milwaukee Brotherhood of Firefighters to the South Eastern Wisconsin Healthcare Emergency Readiness Coalition.

Most recently Assistant Chief Parish has been at the forefront when dealing with the Milwaukee Fire Department’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This involved implementing a system for contact tracing EMS patients in addition to helping staff the many test sites throughout the community.

Thank you Assistant Fire Chief Parish for your continued devotion to the Milwaukee Fire Department and the city of Milwaukee. Your leadership exemplifies what it means when we say “my community, my career".

The Milwaukee Fire Department headquarters will soon be named after Alonzo Robinson, both our city and our state’s first practicing African American architect. This #BlackHistoryMonth, we honor his legacy by sharing his story and the profound impact he has had on our community.

One of Alonzo’s first projects as designer in charge was the fire department’s headquarters, but his portfolio of work is expansive. He created homes, religious buildings and community centers across our city, such as the former YMCA at 10th and Wisconsin Ave, the McKinley Marina and the Central City Development Corporation.

After serving in World War II, Alonzo Robinson received his degree in architecture from Howard University and moved to Milwaukee in the 1950s. Here, he received his architecture license in 1956.

Alonzo worked as an architect for Milwaukee County from 1975-1988 and founded his own architecture firm, Alonzo Robinson Architect & Sons, in 1972.

In addition to leading the way for other African Americans in architecture, Alonzo also fought for racial justice and desegregation in Milwaukee Public Schools. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and a founding board member of Northcott Neighborhood House.

Sadly, Alonzo Robinson passed away in 2000 at the age of 77. He was a visionary, a pioneer and a truly remarkable man.

The Milwaukee Fire Department has seen an uptick in female recruitment and retention the past few years through our Fire Cadet paid apprenticeship program. So much so, that just under a 1/3 of our Fire Cadets are women. Check out this awesome story from TMJ4's Adriana Mendez and share it with a young lady who would consider a career in the fire service and emergency medicine.

Current Goal

The Milwaukee Brotherhood of Firefighters (MBFF), was established in 1979 as a chapter of the North Central Region of the International Association of the Black Professional Firefighters. Since our inception, our mission has been to address the under-representation of minority groups in the fire and EMS service, through activities that support recruitment, education, and engagement to communities of color in the processes that affect our personal and professional lives.

Taking into account the social and political environment that Milwaukee residents currently are faced with, our longstanding mission is more critical than ever. The current pandemic, combined with a renewed social and racial awareness, continues to highlight the impact of existing and new disparities in communities of color. For decades, our face-to-face fundraising activities have enabled us to provide much-needed scholarship funds to students pursuing careers in firefighting and EMS.

While we’ve adapted our fundraising activities to align with the current climate, proceeds from your purchase will continue to support our long-standing efforts, with an additional focus on providing the technical and supplemental financial resources to students who continue to be challenged with meeting their educational requirements

The MBFF proudly continues to adapt in ways that enable us to still serve our communities and advance our mission, while taking into account the unique challenges that we encounter on a daily basis. On behalf of the well-deserving students that will receive your donations, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
