Our students may be too young to vote in today's election but some of them had the chance to explore voting in their classroom. These are photos from one of our K5 rooms where the students are selecting their choice for President. The candidates are their three teachers. Good luck to Ms. Ali, Ms. Keari and Mr. Raquon and a "hats off" to them for teaching students such an important lesson in life!

We’re starting the week with a peek inside one of our K5 classrooms at Next Door. Teaching here is Ms. Carmen who is reviewing the classroom’s Weekly Focus Board with her students. The board includes the letters, shapes and numbers the children focus on each week to further their growth in these areas of learning. They spend each morning going over the board and then engage in related activities.

We had some fun this past week catching up in person with Next Door students and their families participating in our virtual learning option this fall. We invited them to stop by for an outdoor Fall Festival distribution event where we gave away pumpkins, new books and bags filled with a variety of fun, fall-themed items to keep up the learning and engagement at home. The children pictured here are Kyra and Taddeo – two of Next Door’s K4 students. It was great to see them and all of the children and parents who came by!

We are grateful for groups like Kids Impact Community giving back to their hometown in such a positive and impactful way! Next Door’s Books for Kids Mobile Library is on the road this fall making stops at our 11 early childhood education partnership sites in Milwaukee. The photos here are from stops at La Causa, Inc. and St. Joseph Academy. At both sites, our crew brought the book shelves outside and invited children to select two free books to help build their home libraries. All together, we gave away 341 books! We want thank the teachers and staff at each location for helping us create a safe environment to continue our mobile book distribution this fall. It's such a joy to see a child’s face light up with the gift of a new book to call their own!

We’re starting the week with an introduction to some of our Next Door teachers working in our virtual learning program this fall. This is Mr. Quincy, Ms. Areyus and Ms. Georgia. They teach a class of three-year-old children and connect with them daily online for lessons and activities. We have provided our virtual families with technology and supplies so their children can maintain these critical connections with their teachers and keep their brains growing strong!

We want to give a big THANK YOU to National Professional Basketball Association for a large and generous donation this year to Next Door’s Books for Kids program. As part of a matching gift to a contribution from Brook and Robin Lopez with Milwaukee Bucks, the association donated funding that allowed us to purchase 6,500 new books for the program! The books we purchased include many of our high-need stories reflecting African-American characters and board books. We have already started distributing some of these books to our students and they are so happy to have them to build their home libraries! We’re grateful to the NPBA for this outpouring of giving and support of childhood literacy in Milwaukee! Below is peek at some of the donations and a few of our Next Door readers!

We’re starting the week with a peek inside one of our K4 classrooms at Next Door. We’re sharing a little fun this weekend with some of our K5 boys getting some “air” while shooting hoops in one of our indoor play spaces. Our students get a chance to "blow off some steam" and get some healthy exercise every day at Next Door. As for these two, we think we may have some future NBA stars!

Investing in a child’s earliest years can bring the greatest return down the road. This graph comes from The Heckman Equation - a Nobel Prize winning economics professor from The University of Chicago who focuses his research on the impact of investing in high quality early childhood education.
