This year marks Milwaukee Christian Center's 100th anniversary of serving Milwaukee. MCC traces its roots back to 1921 and the establishment of programming based out of the old Southside Baptist Church on the corner of South Sixth and Washington Streets. That building was razed in 1967 due to construction of the I-94 freeway, but our work and mission have lived on. In 2020 MCC served more than 17,000 people delivering programming at more than 20 sites throughout Milwaukee. We are excited to share our past and our future with you as we celebrate #100yearsofservice! #strongneighborhoods #fullofopportunity

Building affordable homes in Milwaukee while getting your high school diploma

"She likes working with her hands and needed a career track that would pay her more to provide for her family. That's why she chose construction. She is just at the beginning of her career. Sabrina is learning the ropes with an organization called Youth Build which is run by the Milwaukee Christian Center."💪🏼🔨🏠

MCC has connected young adults to opportunity through the YouthBuild program for more than a decade in partnership with Employ Milwaukee, the U.S. Department of Labor, AmeriCorps, and the City of Milwaukee. #strongneighborhoods #opportunity

Sabrina Suarez, 25, has a big family. What might shock you is that even though she is 8-months pregnant, she loves doing construction work.

Proud of our Violence Free Zone youth and team at South Division High School! Appreciate the recognition from the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership #CommunitySchools

"The Violence Free Zone team has been a huge support to South Division High School, our students, and families in every way. The VFZ team took it upon themselves to ensure every student has access to technology, even going as far as delivering devices to students’ homes. They made sure families did not miss a meal by reaching out to families and delivering MPS meals when necessary. The VFZ team has maintained constant contact with students and families through the course of virtual learning to ensure that there were no obstacles getting in the way of their academic success. In a year full of challenges, VFZ stepped up and did everything in their control to ensure they meet the needs of our school community."

Milwaukee Christian Center Gives Youth a Chance to Grow with Grant from Bader - Milwaukee Courier Weekly Newspaper

“We were impressed by the way which Milwaukee Christian Center homed in on this particular age group,” Bridgett Gonzalez said. One of the key strategies at Bader Philanthropies, Inc. is youth development, she said, adding that the YouthBuild program’s mission is multi-faceted: it works with the individual to improve the community.

“We make the assumption that everyone has leadership skills; we just want to give them the opportunity to show them,” Karen Higgins, executive director of Milwaukee Christian Center said.

By Ana Martinez-Ortiz Sabrina Suarez, 25, wanted to obtain her high school diploma. She struggled to stick with a program, but in August 2020, she joined Milwaukee Christian Center’s YouthBuild program. Suarez is considered an Opportunity Youth, a term coined by the Milwaukee Christian Center. Pau...

We're excited to introduce you to some of our team all month long! Today we're highlighting Yolanda Sanchez, Intake Specialist for MCC's Housing Department and Neighborhood Improvement Project, who has connected hundreds of families to the opportunity to improve and maintain their homes! 🏠🔨💪🏽 #StaffSpotlight #BuildingStrongNeighborhoods #squad

Where did you grow up?
I grew up on the South Side of Milwaukee

What neighborhood do you call home?
I call home Silver City.

One fun fact about you:
I enjoy cooking and baking especially at Christmas.

Why do you do what you do?
I started working for the Milwaukee Christian Center’s Neighborhood Improvement Project when I was 18 years old. I was young and didn’t realize how many people needed home repairs until I started volunteering at the Housing Fairs. I do what I do because I enjoy helping people. Whether it’s giving information on home repairs or helping people fill out their application so they can get the help they need to bring their homes back up to code. With this help they can stay in their homes and stay in our neighborhoods.

Milwaukee County Announces 'Credible Messenger' Youth Mentorship Program

Milwaukee Christian Center is proud to be a part this effort.

"Kweku TeAngelo Cargile works for Milwaukee's Office of Violence Prevention. He said he wants young people to know that they have not been forgotten. “We see you. We hear you. We know this year has been difficult. There are so many things we want to do for you, and we’re doing those things, we just haven’t gotten that information to you. Know we’re coming for you, we’re looking for you and we will support you,” Cargile said."

Wednesday, Milwaukee County officials unveiled a new mentoring program, called "Credible Messenger," for young people involved in the criminal justice system.

Community groups will launch multiple campaigns to reduce reckless driving in Milwaukee

Muskego Way Forward, a program of the Milwaukee Christian Center, will partner with LISC Milwaukee (Local Initiatives Support Corporation), Imagine MKE and others on several projects. Among them are performance art events at high-traffic areas; “slow down” lawn signs and other visual messages; and public demonstrations on crosswalks, which the group started last year after a fatal crash caused by reckless driving.

“The crosswalk actions are to bring awareness to drivers that they need to pay attention to pedestrians,” said Edith Chavez, program manager and lead organizer for Muskego Way Forward. Chavez and other residents, including youth, walked around the area of South 16th and West Mitchell streets last year holding signs urging drivers to also keep an eye out for the many children in the area who walk to and from school.

Groups plan to use billboards, bus ads, performance art, educational booths, poster contests and other strategies to help stop reckless driving. The campaigns are being funded by grants from the Milwaukee Department of Public Works.

We're excited to introduce you to some of our team all month long! Today we're highlighting Lavelle Gill, Older Adult Meal Sites Manager, who manages a network of meal sites that have provided thousands of meals to older adults in the past year! #StaffSpotlight #BuildingStrongNeighborhoods #squad Milwaukee County Department on Aging

Where did you grow up?
I grew up on the North Side of Milwaukee - on Capitol Drive.

What neighborhood do you call home?
Although I live in the suburbs now, the North Side is where I call home. It's where my early experiences of life and my fondest memories are.

One fun fact about you:
I'm the only one in my family that does NOT wear glasses. My mom and dad wore them, my siblings and wife and kiddos all wear glasses 🤓

Why inspires you?
My parents inspire me - Their hard work to shelter, raise, provide for myself and my siblings that resulted in me being the person that I am today is a great source of inspiration. Music inspires me - Great songs make their homes in the hearts of human beings! The ability to take something that didn't exist and turn it into something people can vibe to, celebrate to, even excel and dream to is amazing inspiration to me.
