As youth agencies plan for fall, they draw on lessons learned from the summer

“Now we’re constantly looking for ways to get youth involved in their own neighborhood and build a lasting testament to their involvement in their own community.” - Brian Stewary, MCC Youth Development Program

Organizations that serve youth had to get creative with programming once COVID-19 struck. Here’s what they learned—and what it may mean for the fall.

Check out Perla's story about being a youth intern with Milwaukee Christian Center this summer featured on Love Wisconsin.

"My cousin told me about the summer program in Kosciuszko Park three years ago. First, I was a camper, then a volunteer, and last summer I started my first year working there with a paid internship...."

Part 2 of 2 - “I grew up in Milwaukee and when I turned two my parents found a house and we moved to Cudahy, about 15 miles from Kosciuszko Park. It was fun to grow up in a neighborhood where there were kids playing on my block. It’s a calm place, compared to the South Side. Here you don't hear anything at night, really, except for an airplane sometimes because my house is by the airport.

Before the pandemic I didn’t know how much I enjoyed going to school. I missed it after we stopped going. I would complain in the mornings, saying I didn’t want to get up. Now I keep thinking I should have been grateful for waking up early and having the chance to go! I really like history class and talking about how things were before I was born. It’s crazy to me to think one day other people will learn about COVID-19 in history class. Something that I lived!

My cousin told me about the summer program in Kosciuszko Park three years ago. First, I was a camper, then a volunteer, and last summer I started my first year working there with a paid internship. We would usually go on field trips, hop on the bus and go to lots of places! Summerfest, the zoo, swimming, roller skating. My favorite part was meeting new people. I became friends with everyone in the camp. It’s a very welcoming space. This year has been different. We can’t do all these field trips because everything is closed, and we didn't really get the same kids from past summers because their parents were concerned about Covid. And we understood. So, we went around the community, calling and asking neighborhood kids if they would like to join this year. I think this has been a very positive thing, meeting new kids from the community and talking to them. We never really did that before.

Although the activities had to change, the projects have been fun. We did a photography class, where kids brought a stuffed animal or a random toy, and we went around the community and took pictures with them. I enjoyed working in the garden too. We built it and got to paint the wood around it. I enjoyed painting and priming it so much, but I didn’t get to plant anything. I’m not working there anymore since the internship ended, but I’m planning on going next week to see the garden and what they have planted. The kids from the community that came this summer are probably going to want to join our day camp next summer too... if there is one, if everything is safe then.

Something I’ve realized after what has happened is to appreciate everything I have before it's gone. Back in March, I was in English when the principal announced that we weren't going to return to school. And I was happy. I was like, yay, vacation. But I never imagined everything that was going to happen. Our life changed from one day to another, so I think we really need to value what we have.”

"Currently, Richardson and a team of local teens affiliated with the Milwaukee Christian Center (MCC) finished a 200-foot mural. The mural was an ongoing two-tier project located between 13th and 14th Streets on Forest Home Avenue on the back of the El Rey Foods grocery store.

Group of Milwaukee nonprofit leaders commit to diversifying their boards, workforce

MCC Executive Director Karen Higgins is proud to be collaborating with a group of twenty plus organizations to drive change in our community.

"The group said it is committed to diversifying the membership of their organizations’ board of directors, mentoring employees who are racially and ethnically representative of the clients their organizations serve to be in leadership positions, and recruiting, developing and retaining a racially diverse workforce at all levels of their organizations.

They said they will also “prevail community leaders and the philanthropic community to address systemic racism,” support policy reforms related to the use of police force, criminal justice reform, discriminatory housing policies that perpetuate segregation and minimum wage. They said they will also promote racial equity in public education and voter registration among their staff and clients.

“We know that completing a checklist of items will not, alone, achieve our goal, so we commit to developing shared benchmarks and being transparent about our progress,” the group said. “These efforts must be deeply rooted in our mission, our values and in our daily work.”

The executives of the Milwaukee Urban League, SaintA, YMCA of Southeastern Wisconsin and 18 other Milwaukee nonprofit organizations have pledged to take steps to dismantle structural racism in the community, including diversifying their boards and staff.
